New thermostat. New Temperature Switch. Still overheating.
For the vacuum leak.... can either do a smoke test, (needs the right machine), or, the manual way.... and go exploring every vacuum line in the truck. Yeah, lots of fun.....
Putting in a larger alternator won't hurt anything.
If there is a 'main fuse', make sure it matches the output of the alternator. Might also wanna upgrade the wire from the alt, to the PDC, or wherever it ends up.

Why do you think you have a vacuum leak?
The old method with a carb was to crank it up and let it idle with the breather cover off. Put your hand over the air intake and restrict the air going into the engine, without killing it and if the idle goes up you have a vacuum leak, If the idle goes down when you restrict the air you do not have a vacuum leak. I would try that first. Its free and will tell you something.
To isolate a leak.
Disconnect any vacuum hoses coming off the intake manifold and temporarily plug the manifold side with a short hose with a screw in the end. This will isolate the leaky system and go from there if it idles better.
Some guys say let it idle and spray the hoses or possible source with WD-40. When you spray the leaking area the idle will smooth out temporarily. Some say use carb cleaner, I would strongly suggest you do NOT use carb cleaner unless you want to take a chance burning up your van and your own ___ at the same time.
Could be a hose or a bad gasket from the intake manifold on up.
