A500 for A518 Swap
I lost Reverse on my 1990 B250 Camper Van (A500). Now Im wanting to swap another transmission into it. Mind you, Im just going for the cheapest, easiest way to get an OK transmission back into the van so i can sell it. The local salvage yard doesn't have any A500's.
I was reading: You can swap in an A518. All A500's have a lockup system while NOT All A518's do, so I would need to find an A518 with the lockup. I would want to make sure that the transmission I find is one that was mounted to the same engine as my vans' (318). And I haven't read about this yet but am wondering, if I find a transmission that was mounted to a 4wd vehicle, i can still use it, i just disregard the parts after it that are meant for 4 wheel drive (transfer case etc)?
Is this all correct? Am I accounting for everything so that I can just drop one out and slide in the other?

You need a trans out of a 2wd vehicle. 4x4 won't work. According to theory, the 500 and the 518 are the same overall length, so, driveshaft shouldn't be a problem. The 518 is physically larger though, but, in a Van, I don't think that's an issue either. (as the vans came with the 518 trans in any event.)
