Default Best way to clean around transmission pan and transmission?

I am in the process of trying to replace the transmission pan gasket as I have a leak somewhere in the transmission. While it's likely the gasket, I would like to clean around the entire accessible exterior of the transmission case to 1) prevent debris and gunk from getting everywhere while dropping the pan and 2) to be able to see if it is leaking from somewhere else.

You can see that the grease, dirt, grime build up is fairly significant on the case and around these connections. I've been using this Purple Power Citrus Cleaner degreaser to clean around the pan but it's requiring a good amount of scrubbing. I'd like to be able to take it to a power washing spot and spray it down, but am concerned of that causing issues. I'd rather not use a bunch of chemicals if possible but will do that if needed. Just looking for the best way to get all this gunk off without damaging anything or spending hours on every nook with a bristle brush.

Also, curious what this cut green wire is.. forgive my ignorance I haven't messed with these transmissions before. Thanks in advance for suggestions!

Normally, I would say that cut wire goes to the vehicle speed sensor, but, your van shouldn't even have one there..... Does your speedometer work? Check engine lite on?

As for cleaning, meaner chemicals are in order, but, given all the regulations put out by the EPA, and various other regulatory agencies, finding something has become difficult, to say the least..... Don't use a powered pressure washer though, the develop enough pressure to blow water thru any seals etc. Ya just don't wanna go there. Garden hose is ok though.

We have one of the 'quarter wash' bays around here that advertises as degreaser.... which actually worked pretty good the last time I used one. Don't know if those are still around or not, it's been a while.

I use plain old foamy engine degreaser. let it sit for 15-20 minutes, then blast if off with the garden hose.

Appreciate the reply. The speedometer does work but the CEL is on. Maybe that's why? Guess I could try to replace that part.

I was thinking about going to one of those quarter wash/self service power wash places. Forgot they have that setting. So do you think I'd be fine to use that or would that be too much pressure?

Also read that diesel and a paintbrush works really well but don't think I'm gonna mess with all that. Would have to buy a container etc .

The purple power stuff works pretty well and doesn't seem nearly as toxic as half the other products. But it doesn't cut through like degreaser would.

Going to give the quarter wash a try thanks!

By the looks it's leaking from the o ring/seal for the lever shaft and throttle shaft. # 072 & 349 in the diagram.

It does seem to have a leak around there. Thanks for sharing this link. Now wondering how much of a pain in the *** it'll be to try and fix this. Probably leaking in several other areas as well lol
