So why is an external regulator not working? Seems to me, that would be the way to go. Numerous others have made the conversion successfully......

I will try and do some work to establish a proper excitation base voltage,

It seems 1.5 volts is a decent all around baseline, if you were in an emergency, it would not let the battery totally die

If I am able to, I want to take some alternators apart and test the winding voltages, thankfully the output voltages are relatively the same across all modern alternators, so I only need to be concerned with the field/excitation voltage

Is it possible to activate 4th gear using a switch or series of switches, when the shift lever is in D(rive) ?

PCM just grounds a solenoid for fourth gear. (overdrive) There are some requirements before it will though.... Vehicle speed being right up there on the list.

So you know which wire to ground? I'm already having to manually shift, and I have a long distance to go, the engine really revs high even at just 45 mph, it would waste a lot of fuel

Pin 6, possibly a brown wire down at the trans. At the PCM, should be connector B, pin 21.

Real question is though, why does your trans not want to shift?

I am working on it now,

Do you happen to know how much current is drawn on that wire? I have smaller toggle switches I may have to buy a larger one

Likely less than 5 amps..... but, that's just a guess.
