p0601 code

RE: p0601 code
P0601 - Internal powertrain control module fault condition detected (failed memory check). Usually a voltage spike to the PCM will cause this to happen. This is one code that really can't be erased nor flashed away, nor fixed. The PCM is nearly brain dead living on it's last brain cells. If you drive, you take the chances of getting stranded some place. In one moment the vehicle runs fine, hit a bump, turn on the radio, the lights or what ever, and the vehicle will just goes dead.
All the guages may work smoothly, but something in the PCM is fried whether it affects the driveability or not, but if you ever take it to get inspected it'll never pass since that code will remain there until you replace the PCM.
Don't bother spending the $80 to have it diagnosed at a dealer or shop, they are just gonna tell you to replace the PCM if the vehicle is beyond the 8/80 Fed warrenty.
The catalytic converter and PCM are covered by 8/80 Federal Emission Warranty 40 CFR part 85 and section 207 of the Federal CCA. (8yr or 80k miles, whichever comes first.)
If the vehicle has California emission and is registered in California,Massachusetts,or Vermont;
additional parts are covered by a 7/70 warranty: fuel pump, fuel tank, intake manifold, TCM.
The dealer will require you to OK diagnostic charge (check out time) This is to cover their costs in the event your problem is not covered by warranty. If the PCM is found defective and covered by warranty, there should be NO cost to you. NO parts NO labor NO checkout charge NO shop supplies.
