Default which ram?

Hey all, I will be moving to Canada from Australia and will be bringing my Girlfriend and baby. I like the idea of having a 4 door Dodge Ram with 4 wheel drive and V8 power. I also like to race motorcycles and want a Ram with a long bed to put the bike in and take it to the track. In the winter I want to be able to enclose the bed with a fiberglass cover to keep everything dry. I am unsure what I should get, I like V8 petrol or gas power but some fellow aussies swear a diesel would be better in the icy mornings. I just seen the Dodge SRT-10 Ram first time I ever seen anything like it but it would be too unusable for us at the moment! I like the 2500 series because it has 4 doors and a big bed! After seeing the prices of used trucks in Canada I am blown away how cheap they are! [8D] the price of a 1996 Chev truck here in Australia with about 140,000km on it would be cheap if you could find one under $40,000 BRING ON THE RAMS! [&:]

oh hell yeah thats an awesome looking machine so the diesel would be better in the cold climate of Canada? and having 4 wheel drive would be better on icy roads yeah? one thing I noticed about the trucks on the autotrader.ca site was that if you wanted a quad cab truck you could only get the short bed, is this true?

cool thats good news! can someone explain to me the difference in the hemi engines and cummins plants? I am after a balanced torquey engine with plenty of punch off the line and after a few neccessary modifications I want a few more ponies under the bed things like a nice growling exhaust system and Air intake system would be on the cards as soon as I buy the truck

Hemi ~ gas
Cummings ~ diesel

Hemi ~ V8

hey Acid it's Cummins. no g.

hemi = 345hp @ 5400rpm, 375 lb-ft @ 4200rpm
cummins = 325hp @ 2900rpm, 610 lb-ft @ 1600rpm

You have to rev the snot out of a Hemi to make peak power, whereas the Cummins is designed more for heavy duty use where you need power way down low. Being a purpose built turbo diesel it's stout as hell, and incredibly easy to make gobs more power. It's way cheaper to get serious power from a Cummins than a Hemi. You'll also get better fuel economy with the Cummins.

But the downside is that diesel fuel isn't as happy in cold climates - if it gets too cold it can gel and you won't be driving at all. It's also recommended to keep a block warmer plugged in if it's really cold.

diesel fuel gels [] oh my god how cold are we talking about? I like the idea of the cummins low down grunt and pulling power but don't want to to be stranded!, If it snows heavily is it a big advantage to have 4 wheel drive or will 2 wheel drive be enough to get out of some sticky situations? and is the 4 wheel drive switchable? by that I mean is it constant or can it be disengaged with a central diff lock or hub locks?
