Can you hear the tick at speed, or only at idle?
I assume it might be heard at any speed depending on how loud it gets. I only really hear mine if easily if the truck has been idling. If I come to stop and get out truck I have pop the hood to here it, but after a long idle, I can hear from 15 feet away.
It sounds to me as if the "tick" gets worse after the oil warms up and thins out some. Does a thicker oil solve the "tick"?

To quote a different post, From BigDave

"I had the Hemi tick - which got pretty loud after a long period at idle. I put in Mobil 1 10W30 and now it's gone." - 5/2/2004 9:21:52 PM

So, maybe he will mention something here, if its still gone, or not. I'll be going Mobil1 when my first oil change occurs in 2000k.

Is the sound a "tick" like a clock or more like a vibration? B/c I need to take my 4.7L in to the shop here b/c I have vibration that i think is coming from the trany. Any suggestions? It only happens at idle.

Thanks nick

We've got a 2004 Durango Limited with the Hemi and about 2,500 miles, and we too have the dreaded tick at idle. Seems like it's coming from the lower sides of the engine, either from the crank or camshafts, and only after the engine is warm. The dealer says its normal, and every Hemi powered Ram or Durango I've come across seems to make the same noise at idle.

At 1,500 miles I put in 10W/30 Mobil1 and a K&N oil filter, but the tick remains. Kind of embarrasing for a brand new $40,000 rig to sound like that, so we too are eagerly awaiting more info, or better yet, a fix!

These kinds of ticks are almost always oil related. On older vehicles it's usually due to clogged oil galleries and passages causing metal to metal contact on lifters and rocker arms. You probably notice the sound more after the engine has heated up. This is due to the viscosity drop in the oil and quick draining galleries. If you don't live in Alaska, you might want to try a good synthetic 20W50 oil. Mine is gone (4000 miles).

Hemi on....
