Hemi "Tick"
I have already posted a message about what I think is a pre ignition condition on my new 04 Hemi. However, while looking around the forum I read about the Hemi "Tick", and wondered what it was, as well as if it could be the sound I am hearing?
What I hear is a knocking sound very similar to pre ignition under two conditions:
1. The truck is under a light load, eg going up a hill
2. The truck is operating between 1800 and 2500 rpm's.
I have always run 89 octane in it, and have just put in my first tank of 91, to no avail. It has only 1100 miles at this writing.

RE: Hemi "Tick"
I, too, have the HEMI tick. I thought it was pre-ignition, so i ran a coupla tanks of 91 Shell, to no avail. The dealer ran the computer on it and said specs were OK. Any suggestions would be appreciated by me, too...

My non-Dodge truck did the same thing. I went from 87 octane to 89 to 91 to 93 (Chevron) when it finally stopped. I also bought some octane boost from www.autobarn.com that kept it from coming back. Those engineers must be trying to squeeze every fraction of a mile from each gallon of gas....[:@]

Come to think of it, the high octane fuel I used was Shell V-power, which is 93, I think. It still didnt work. Do you think that Chevron gasoline would make a difference?
I've heard that ALL the formulations, within each grade , are the same.
Would be nice if there was a dealer fix, tho...
Is this possibly some problem which wouldn't show on the diagnostic computer???

RE: Hemi "Tick"
I have been using 93 octane to no avail. I am going to run mine by the dealer this week.
As for the computer question. I understand, and I may be wrong here, there is no knock sensor in the Ram, no sensor=no reading. The only way the computer would indicate there is a problem is if another sensor read a problem, such as an EGR sensor or oxygen sensor. Were any of the sensor's putting out a code on your truck?

They may tell you that it's the valve lifters and that they were designed to work that way...that's the story I got on my Honda...it ran like a top all the time, but the sound was a different story...[:'(]

Can you hear the tick at speed, or only at idle?
