Really stupid quesiton but gonna ask anyway
Ok, laugh at me if you must, but it's the only way I'll learn, or if i'm doing this right. How are you all calcuating mpg??? i keep a book and everytime i fill up, i write down, odometer milage, date, type of gas, trip miles, gallons put in and amount spent. I think the last time i calculated mpg i divided the trip by the gallons put in. Am I doing this right or not? Once you're done laughing please help lol[]

thanks, I'm not as cool to have a newer ram with the button overhead, I have to do it the old fashion way and get out the calculator and do it that way, some day i'll have a new ram

RE: Really stupid quesiton but gonna ask anyway
I recently took a 640 mile trip to Houston with my '03 QC HEMI. I reset the overhead computer before I left and checked it all the way. I also used the old paper and pencil method. After spending over $70 in gas for the trip, I showed 15.3 mpg on the overhead and 18.2 mpg on paper. Not very accurate in my opinion. In my experience of this, I would suggest using the old method to be sure.

Why not fill up the tank (full), and let it run dry, then divide it by how much miles you did.
But when you see it running reserved, have a can of fuel to get you to the gas station![8D]

Instead of taking the risk of running out of gas, I would suggest the following procedure:
1. Fill your tank completely from wherever it is now.
2. Set your tripometer to -0-, or take note of the odometer reading if no tripometer is available.
3. Drive until the tank is somewhere below half a tank, closer to empty is preferrable, but don't try to get it empty.
4. Refill the tank completely and make note of the gallons used to fill up. Note: GALLONS not PRICE!
5. At the same time, make note of the mileage driven since last fill up.
6. Get out the trusty paper and pencil, or calculator for the more advanced users
7. Divide the number of miles by the gallons used to get an accurate mpg.
8. Realize how costly gas is and kick yourself for doing the above steps[:'(]
