Default Underdrive Pulley

Anyone ever put on or think about putting on underdrive pulleys on their truck? Did you get much power back from them, are they worth it? Just trying to see what all your opinions are on stuff.

On a STOCK engine they work great!!!!
Add ANY electrical draw (lights, Stereo or a trailer)and you'll have problems at night with the AC on unless you get a bigger Alt. pully!!!!!!

A way around that is if you are doing the stereo bit, is to add a "cap". It is usually a 1 farad capacitor that runs around $100. Any stereo shop has them, heck even walmart has them. What a cap does is stores a small amount of voltage for peaks that hit hte electrical system(the boom booms). For draws that are constant, they do little, if no help. They are "transient" devices.

I notice at night that my interior lights pulsate a bit - I figure either my alternator is undersized (as far as I know its stock) or its on its way out?

The lights dont go totally out and you have to look at them to notice but after reading this post I would assume I would have a real issue if I pursued the under pulley option.

Is the under pulley system really worth the $200.00 + dollars?

Any thoughts are appreciated.

Do you have any extra lights or stereo equipment added? You should be able to take it to a parts place like Auto Zone and get a free alternator check. If it is a steady pulsating, I would say that the alternator is having a lil prob.

I would tell anyone with the 5.9 to get the pulleys. I had them on my first 96 with headers, MPM Mperformance Comp., air ram hood with KnN. They did make it quicker once the RPM's hit above 2500. On idle the voltage would go down to around 10 or so. Had to rev up to 1800 or so to launch hard as the lower voltage would bog it down. Used to keep up with stock 5.0 mustangs with these mods.

They are great for a manual tranny where you keep the rpm spinning a bit higher than an automatic anyway. The only time you should have a voltage problem is at idle. Anything above idle and the belt speeds everything up enough that you shouldn't notice any difference IMO.

No extra elec equipment, yet, the only thing I have replaced was the stock radio - I put in a Kenwood KDC-9011.

I am planning on adding some lights to the front eventually.

I am gonna be pissed if I have to buy an alternator- its only got 30,000 on it!
