Default Long distance traveling with Ram

I do a lot of highway travelling anywhere from 50-100 miles one way about every weekend. With gas going down (Finally, still praying for more dropping) I'm still leary of taking my Ram on long trips because of using a lot of gas. My finance goes to grad school about 50 miles down the interstate, she lives 100 miles in the opposite direction, all interstate driving, and i'm planning a trip to Pittsburgh this weekend, from Harrisburg (where I live) is about 3 + hours depending on traffic and about 200 miles. Does anyone else get second thoughts about using their ram for long trips because of low mpg and cost of having to fill up when you get there for the return trip? My fiance and mom have Malibu's that I usually take on these long trips, but I love driving my truck but when ya go away on trips, usually only a day, my thoughts turn to filling er up. Don't get me wrong, I'm not going to give my truck up for anything but just wanted to know if anyone else felt the same way and what they do? Just looking to see if i'm alone or not.
Thanks
Matt

Once you get up to speed you get better gas mileage than your usual "around town" mpg.

I get 13-15 in town and 22-27 on the highway.

Although I would like taller gears in my new truck for the economy reason and the ease of driving , my short term ownership is surprising me in that respect. I have the rumble bee and on a secondary highway with limited stop lights I'm getting 15/16 MPG so far.. I've only had it 2 days now and it is getting better than I thought MPG for the driving I have been doing. I will not be surprised to get 17 down the highway and am looking foward to taking the bee on a trip. I am more than sure it won't get MPG like the economy comuters. I am trying to find what Mopar has for bolt ons that will help. They already are coming out with dual exhaust which I see some of the aftermaket people are claiming up to a couple miles per gallon increase along with HP. Some of the aftermarket people are claiming the same increase with some quick bolt ons for air intake. I'm hoping Mopar has something for the air intake that would work with the hood scoop.

I agree that highway travelling is better then the stop and go city driving. I really only check the mpg when i fill up, like i'm going to do in a few minutes. I'm not sure how to calcuate the mpg w/o having to fill up, if you know a way let me know. I just don't know, esp because i don't make that much i don't want to be stressing about filling the truck, but its a reality, i have to do it, i just don't want to cringe anymore at the pump. I'm on the verge of getting a CAI but i'm afraid i'm gonna get one and find out its the worst one you can get. but hopefully tonight i'll see some good numbers in my lil book that i fill out when i get gas

Monrozombi,
I have taken mine for the trip down to San Bernardino from the San Fran area a couple times and once the trucks on the highway the mileage is rather good for a big truck. Down side is the cost of fuel. My average is in the 26 to 27 miles to the gallon range and as long as the traffic is light I can get close to 475 to 500 per tank. I have traveled the truck well in all directions from the Bay area and it is a well mannered commuter. So why not if you love your truck.

Heres the equation for MPG. Miles drive since last fill up-divided-by gallons added to tank.
Example:500miles/32gallons= 15.62mpg

and a link for a calculator: http://www.webwinder.com/wwhtmbin/java_mpg.html

I'm having a big war on another forum about this very subject. I say a stock hemi cant break 20mpg in actual driving city and hiway mixed. How do I know this?

Well, my V-6 5 spd only gets 22+. Yet I hear Hemi owners all the time talking about how their mileage is better than mine. There's NO WAY you can get 27 MPG with QC truck with a 350 inch motor. It just is not possible.

There was a time when no fullsize pickup truck made broke 14 mpg - now they get 27? Please, you cant get 27 with a Dakota and a V6.

I average 15mpg in mixed driving in my HEMI QC.
My buddy had a 2002 V6 5 speed Ram 4x2 which he selected for better fuel economy and he averaged 15.7 mpg over the coarse of a three month test period. Also about 50/50 mixed driving. He just traded it in on a '04 QC 4.7 V8 4x4.

A small engine that works really hard uses as much gas as a big one that is geared tall and is hardly working.
Not rocket science.

I can agree with poor gas milage in a car that is underpowered! I had a 4 cyl jeep cherohee with a standard trany and it got about 6 less MPG than my kid was getting out of his high output six with an auto. And he didn't believe in any driving manor that would conserve fuel. I also get bettr milage than my brither in law who has a v6 durago pu with my ram 1500 318. I have had a lto of cars/trucks but none have impressed me the way this hemi ram has. I stopped into the pizza shop last night and got some take out. While I was waiting and checking out my truck I noticed about 9 out of 10 people were checking it out too.....

I just traded my 2002 1500 quad cab 4.7L 4x2 with the 20 inch mag wheels, 3.92 rear end in on a 2004 2500 QC 4x4 diesel this past saturday. That 1500 never got better than 15.2 MPG on the highway and mixed driving was usually 13.5 to 13.8 MPG. I went from San Antonio TX to Clarion PA last year and the best mileage on that trip was 15.2 MPG (which was the best I ever got on that truck). I rarely "put my foot in it" as I usually drive conservatively.

27 MPG from a Hemi 1500? Sorry, I don't believe it.
