Default Need help identifying a noise.

2001 Dodge Ram, 2500, Quad Cab, Part Time 4X4 w/ND241, 5.9L, 5 Spd Manual transmission(NV4500). about 22,000 miles. I can only discribe this as a intermittant chatter like noise which seems to occur only under certain conditions. The chattering can also be felt in the transmission stick shift shaft but not in the transfer case shift shaft. The nosie seems to occur after the truck has had a chance to warm up, the noise is intermittantly present when the transmission is in 4th, 5th and neutral with a fwd speed of at least 30 mph and higher, does not seem to be present under load or compression. Does not matter if the clutch is in or out. I have changed the transmission and transfer case fluid and did not detect any metal particals. At first I thought that a piece of heat shield sheetmetal was vibrating but all the sheetmetal seems to be secure. Hope someone can help.

Thanks,

Bob Mc

Default RE: Need help identifying a noise.

I had a problem with my 95 where when I accelerated I had a chatter around certain gears, it sounds almost exactly like yours. I found it to be an exhaust problem. I brought it in for a few welds and no more chatter. Hope this helps, let me know if you want more info on my chatter.

Smack the catalytic converter with a rubber mallot a few times...... they are famous for rattles
If it's noisey it will need Gutted or replaced before it starts clogging up!!!
