Cold Air Intake

Cold Air Intake
Hey,
On eBay, I don't know if anyone has seen this, but there are some cold air intake kits, new, for around 40 dollars, chrome air box, and tube with a filter, plus all needed to install. Anyone think these things are good?
I figured since they cost about the same as replacing my filter with a K&N one, why not, might as well try, and they will probably bring out some more power.
I posted about this a while back, but now I'm thinking about really buying one.
Mike.

RE: Cold Air Intake
Recent article in Trucks compared top 5 cold air intakes, from Airaid, K&N, Volant, AEM and AFE. All thou the test were done a bowtie, the numbers were still informative.
Stock - Chev 5.3L - 186hp
AEM - +9hp
Airaid - +5.6hp
K&N - +11.5hp
Volant - -2hp .. ya, minus
AFE - Didnt fit.
They do have editors notes on boht the AFE, and Volant. They think the AFE was just a mix up in shipping, got wrong kit, and for Volant, since it was a sealed system, unlike the others, it hp doesnt show up well with a open hood, on a dyno, but say that the manufatcor, claims a 9hp gain.

RE: Cold Air Intake
I installed the AIRMAX CAI on my Ram 1500 the fit and finish was great. I did notice that I have a small horsepower gain on the top end and a noticeable gain in the lower end. It does help out as far as mileage somewhat (about a 3-4 mpg gain) I also installed a throttlebody spacer at the same time. I don't know how those E-bay ones that are 40 dollars are. I guess that you take your chances, my guess would be that you are getting cheaper quality materials, so the CAI could fall apart at 3 months or maybe less. The problem with the volant CAI on the Ram is that you have to pull one of your fog lights to run the intake piping to the air filter, which also adds more piping and a longer distance for the air to flow. on a Volant system it would not matter if the hood was open or not. it is a sealed system drawing air from the lower front of the truck.

RE: Cold Air Intake
I recently installed an AirForceOne CAI on my truck after a buddy of mine recommended it. The kit installed in about 20 minutes, clipped right on the stock base plate. I don't have any numbers to back it, but I do notice some seat of the pants performance gains and have picked up a couple extra miles to the gallon.

anyways, i got a cheap ebay intake, and of course it came w/ a plastic TB hat, which didn't seal up very well at all, so then i purchased another one (from slvrmagnum) w/ a metal TB hat, which seals up really nice actually...so i used all the parts i could besides for the plastic tb hat, and an extra filter.
here it is ...

RE: Cold Air Intake
Hey Mike,
I'm the biggest advocate of NOT buying those big name brand CAI. For one, you're not buying a critical aftermarket bolt -on (i.e., PCM, computer, yadda yadda yadda). All we're talking about here is removing the restrictive and highly inefficient intake and installing a more straight and better breathing setup.
I for one, just purchased one of those ebay CAI for $58 bucks shipped. But what I'm going to do for arguements sake is take my new truck to get a baseline at my local dyno and then install the "cheapo" ebay intake and see what kind of results I get. Expect to see a dyno chart from me soon.

airbrat,
i agree with you, but i am poor, so...i cheaped out..
mostly due to the fact of my front end being brand new w/ power steering gear.
i would like to see the dyno chart also, i imagine it cant be any worse than stock..but i have been wrong before.
but i doubt it's going to be much better either... but are trucks are different..anywho dyno it up.
