so why not just buy a new instrument gauge cluster thing? or get one from wreckers? i dont belive that its just held in the thing and not in the computer, replace pcm too then i guess.

hey hold on guys what if the deakership does this to us? they have the knowledge **** to them its just money big money especially the difference if a car is 35k or 100k

On 2nd gen Rams, it is just stored on the odometer as I stated. I can give you proof in the fact that the Service Manual specifically says that is how it is done, and I have used as many as 3 used PCMs out of other trucks in my own truck, and my odometer never changed. The PCM only increments it as you drive. I would bet there is also something stored on that same odometer chip that references the vehicle VIN though.

If you go into a dealership to get a new odometer (say yours breaks or no longer works correctly), they have to initiate a legal document disclosing the actual miles on the vehicle. Then the factory ships out a new cluster with that mileage preprogramed into it.

there is another, really simple way to turn off odometer, without changing instrument clusters and all that.

anybody who actually worked on cars, should be able to figure it out

If you keep your origanal mileage and change the cluster because speedo and a couple of the other gauge's don't work can the dealer program the cluster you get from the junk yard with the wright milaege a brand new cluster runs about $700 I bought one with 50k and and mine has 104k.
