Default RE: The Stealth Experience

My story begins with my grandpa. He had always wanted a sports car so in 1991 my grandma got him a Dodge Stealth ES for his birthday. I'm 20 years old and when I was younger my grandpa promised me the car, which I never really took seriously. So as I was getting closer to my 16th brithday my grandpa started bringing up that he was giving me the car. But my parents weren't sure of me driving a stick when so young and inexperienced when it came to driving. So instead they said I could have the Stealth when I graduated high school and went to college, because then I would need it more to get home etc. This didn't bother me because I just drove our Dodge Ram, which wasn't very practical in the city but I didn't have to pay for gas either.

So two summers ago I got a summer job and kept using my parents' cars to get back and forth, which posed a problem because now my twin sisters had their licences too. So I said I couldn't wait for the Stealth anymore and I needed to buy a car. Toward the end of the summer, when visiting my other grandma, in her town there was a '00 Dodge Dakota 4x4 fully loaded. So I looked at it and it was in great condition, plus with a pricing mistake they would uphold it was a relative steal. However when I mentioned it to my parents they sai they needed to think about it. An hour later they called back and said that I could finally have the Stealth.

My grandpa took extremely good care of the Stealth, never driving in the winter, and I do the same. Which is tought when you live in Michigan and go to school in Ohio. So I'm currently without vehicle as we store it in my other grandma's garage for the winter. It was fully loaded, my grandpa had a sun roof and spoiler put in/on it. Plus, back in '91, my grandpa had a keyless entry unit installed. Everything is stock except the radio and antenna (I got a shorter one, still have the stock). I had a CD/MP3/USB compatible deck put in (stock radio is in my bedroom closet though) and I may put newer speakers in at the end of the summer. And the best part, its a '91 and only has 41,000 miles on it.

I love it and after the drama and time it took to get it, it was worth it. Its my baby. When I graduate college and get my own house, I'll probably buy a new Dodge Ram and the Stealth will revert to staying in the garage with only occasional drives to keep it mint and low mileage.

Here's a pic:

my story is simple lol. Went out looking to buy a truck as a first car(was 16) and seen the stealth. It's a base model but i liked it. The only thing i dislike about it is front wheel drive but with some time and money eventually that should change. The vaulve seals were leaking when i got her, so that had to be replaced, replaced timing belt and plugs. The got a set of wheels, replaced blown speakers. Also found out that car used to have major rust prooblems and been patched.
this is few weeks after i got mine stealth(already added the stripe thing)

1st one
(91 SOHC auto)I bought from auction with only engine block left under hood. Everything else was nicely put in trunk. Engine was overheated and valve seats slightly moved off center. Heads were redone and I put it back together. I wanted to sell it but wife said she was going to divorce me if I didn't give car to her.
2nd one I bought with front damage (93 manual) and 3rd one while looking for parts for 2nd one. I fixed them drove for awhile.
4th one I got with cylinder head gasket blown. That is exactly what I wanted: red, SOHC, manual and with wing on trunk. I also like ***** on hood and 94, 95don't have them, mine is 93.
I replaced head gaskets, valve seals, heads redone (120 doll), 3 tentioners, front crank and cam seals. I repaired 2 motor mounts myself- that is just stupid to pay 250 for 2 mounts. (Ican repair yours) One injector wires were broken (code 41), replaced coolant temp sensor (code 21). I made nice tool for reading codes (LED(light diode)+ resistor, don't do it, if you use wrong LED and resistor you can burn ECU). I also opened ECU to check capacitors. It is great car for me because I am a mechanic but if you cannot fix it yourself it will bleed you dry. I still have nonworking tachometer, don't know if it is bad tach or sound filter.
By the way as far as I know there is not even one part from Chrysler in Stealth. If you need parts you can buy them cheaper from Mitsubishi.

MY story sounds the same as some of th others. When I was 17 I was looking of a car that had better gas MPG's and happend to come across a 91 white base for $3500. My dad bought me the car because he was tired for me putting miles on his 73 Roadrunner. After getting the car I blew up the engine. So I started looking in to Stealths and found out about the better R/Ts and the T/Ts. I knew that the T/Ts and 3000GTs were out of my price range any time soon, so I just dreamed. Well I got the 91 a new engine and drove it for a few years(I still have it). Then my Dads GF's boss bought a 94 R/T T/T and I saw it, I told her if she ever sold it without telling me I would kill her! That was a few yeas ago. Then one day my Dad's GF asked me to move some things at her office to her boss's house. After I was done we started talking about the Stealth. She said the she was donating it to the boy scouts or something for the tax write off. I said "are the kidding me?" she said "why, do you want it?". Well of course I wanted it. So I bought it for $2000. I had some things wrong with it but in the end it was on the road running for under $3500, what a steal!!

I was an insurance adjuster in Florida when Hurricane Andrew hit. I was based in Tampa as an aircraft accident investigator. When Andrew hit, we moved to the Dania, Fl. area and began work on the storm. I decided to buy a new truck, so the wife and I went to dealer in Ft. Lauderdale to look at Dakota's. I found the one I want and it was loaded. I wrote them a check for it and when I went outside, they had new Pearlescent Stealth, (loaded) sitting on the display pad in front of the showroom. The wife was drooling all over it. She wanted that car so bad, I felt bad we could ot afford it. It listed for over $45,000.00 with the demand mark up. No way we could afford something like that.

In 1993 we returned home to Arkansas. I told a friend of mine, who was a salesman at a Dodge dealership near us of my wife's love of the Stealth when she saw that one in Ft. Lauderdale. I had bought her a new Dodge Intrepid and she really enjoyed that car, good gas mileage and rode good. About 3 months of telling my friend of Janice's love of the Stealth, I got a call from him. He said we have the same exact car Janice fell in love with and it is one owner, low mileage and that it had belonged to a Female Doctor. He Dr. decided she wanted a Lexus, so she traded it in. The Dodge dealer bought it at auctiona and now had it on his lot. I had purchased several new Dodge vehicles from this dealer, so I asked Bill to see how much they would take for it in cash. He called back and said to bring Janice over to look at it, which I did. Her remark was, we cannot afford something that expensive, even if I love the car. I agrreed with her, but I wanted to look at it anyway. We took off to the dealers lot and upon arriving found Bill and he took us to the car. My God, it looked new, still had the new smell, no dents, shined like crazy and had 9,993 miles on it. All the service records were in the glove compartment and she had the oil changed every 2,000 miles and had a mobile detailer wax the car every month, man, she was as fanatical about keeping a vehicle new as I was. Bill gave me her number and I called and discussed the car with her. Come to find out her husband, who was also a Doctor, was a very large man and did not like getting into the car, so he told his wife to get a Lexus, (good for me, bad for her). I told Bill we probably could not afford it. He said is the Intrepid paid for and I told him it was. He said would you give me $21,500.00 for the Stealth, cash. I told him we did not need an Intrepid, Dakota, and a Stealth, so I would have to sell the Intrepid first. He said to hurry up, as that was a special price for us from the dealer. A day later he called and said he had someone who wanted and Intrepid, would I bring it down there. I did and bought the Stealth without telling my wife. We got withing $3,000 of what we had paid for the Stealth, so that was a sign that the Stealth really needed a home at our house. it was a 1992 Stealth RT/TT, loaded with everything but the sliding skylight.

When I got back, Janice was on the deck, doing some cleaning. I went out and told her I messed up her Intrepid and for her to please not be mad at me. She is a sweetheart and told me, as long as you are okay, it is okay. She said let me go look at it. I did not go to the garage with her. I heard this loud scream when she entered the garage, a scream of, oh my god, I don't believe you did this. I thought she was mad, but found out, quite the contrary. She msut have hugged me for thirty minutes, much to my joy.

We have loved the car, to this day. It now has 43,288 miles on it, has always been garaged, washed regularly, waxed regularly, and maintained. Only problem we have had was an EMC failure and now the speedometer quits at 40 MPH. She will not sell it and intends to give it to one of our granddaughters in Florida. I just hope it lasts another 10 years, which I am sure it will.
