i started my car this morning and it's making a really loud noise. i have a 2002 dodge stratus. i can't really describe what the noise was like, but it was loud and sounded like the engine was really working. i had a noise previously when my transmission was going in april of last year and it kind of sounded a little like that, but didn't think that it could be that. does anyone know what this noise might be???? i was told that it can have a loud lifter.

 

a "noisy lifter" will sound like someone is tapping lightly on the engine...

 

this isn't like a knocking, it's more like you can hear the engine working and it sounds kind of like the belts are going to come through the hood. i couldn't believe it. i could hear it all the way in my house this morning.

 

is it like a squeal?

 

kind of, but not a loud squeal. the loud noise is like a running noise.

 

Are you saying that the engine sounds normal, just louder as if you had your foot in it?

 

it's not like i have my foot on the gas, it's like a loud idling noise. it's a lot louder when i have the clutch pushed in. when i let the clutch out, it quiets down a little.

 

is it a loud clicking noise when the engine is cold??? mine does that and the dealer cant figure out what it is... it sounds like a lifter tick times 100... its actually quite embarressing. any ideas what that is??

 

i would check your heat sheild or it might be your injectors dodge is netorious for injector noise

 

i took it into the dealer, and ofcourse it was fine when it was there... it only happens on cold mornings... below 20 or so
