Unfortunatly, DBLR is in error....
Mobil 1 is completely Synth and not related to any one of the two types of base crude.
This has always been the case with this product.

If you have information that Mobile One is not using group 3 oil base for there synthetic oil please post the URL where we can read about it. As for Royal Purple if you have infor that shows its not what I thouhgt it was then please post the information.
Also if you are correct about M1 and RP then I'm sorry to have posted the wrong information as it was based on information given to me a long time ago.

Thank you all for the very useful information. I talked to a friend of mine who was in the development loop at GM when they developed the oil life monitor. He advised Mobil 1 and Mobil 1 filter because of the glass media. we talked for an hour and a half about some of the challenges the monitor had to meet; it operates using a complicated algorithm that predicts oil life based on many parameters. The predictions are based on many components, including crank shaft speed. Aparently, there is a magic number used to predict oil shear based on the con rod IPS (inches per second). As engine designs strive to squeeze out max HP and RPM, this can become a problem. Obviously, this is one of many factors that contribute to sludge, but I thought it would be good to share.

Actually, your challenge to prove Mobil 1, proved to be both thought provoking, and informative. A few hours poking about here and there turned up some interesting reading on many oil related forums. For that I thank you.
I see from what I found, that Exxon still equivocally states Mobil 1 is a pure Synthetic. http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/...AQs.aspx#FAQs1. Further reading seems to indicate a common knowlege that the newer Mobil 1 "Extended Performance" is in fact a blend, and apparently classed as Group III.
As this may be where you heard similar, I must deeply apologize for my prior statement. I now understand that the Mobil 1 "EP " based oils most certainly fit your comments.
I also encountered several reads from alarmed consumers that Mobil 1 itself has started shifting to Group 3, but at no point was solid and substantiated fact provided. In fact, the accusation was countered repeatedly by Exxon in reply to several query's. They hold solid that Mobil 1 is a pure Synthetic.
Until someone presents unbiased (ie not a competitor) facts that can hold up in a consumer court of law, I will continue to believe Mobil 1 is Group 4, and not fall prey to current rumors.
Thanks again for the chance to do some stirring of the ol' grey-matter! (Ouch, my head hurts.... oh wait, that's cause of the rum.... sorry)...
