I've heard about issues with the 2.7 timing chains and engine sludge. This came from a couple of wholesale Dealer's who claim they stay away from 2.7's at the Auctions. To me these are different issues. Timing chains may, or may not fail because lubrication. Chain stretch occurs with mileage more so than lack of oil (IMHO). I'm sure those that have experience with high mileage 2.7's can set the record straight regarding recommended maintanence and repair of high mileage 2.7's.

have an 02 with about 53k, think i changed the plugs once and the air filter 3 times. change the oil and filter at 3k, last 3yrs were on the german autobahn. runs like a champ with no issues.

 

I'll pass on what a Chy tech told me on the Chy forum about the 2.7L in my wifes 2006 Sebring, that you need to change the oil every 3K or the engine will get sludged up and need to be replaced at 40-50K. I don't know why DC didn't learn from the same problem that Toyota had a few years ago with sludge that they were sued over and lost a lot of money because of it.

I was also told even if I was to use top of the line synthetic oil like Redline, Amsoil, Royal Purple you still need to change the oil at 4K or I risk the engine needing to being replaced with in 40K because of sludge. I assume the engine has an oil shear problem if it will sludge up as fast as he claimed it will. Good Luck.

When I first started looking into purchasing a Stratus for my wife, she wanted the V6 2.7L engine. But after hearing from Badstrat about the engine, I decided to research the engine a bit. I found a couple of websites that had several complaints about sludge in the engine. Here is one...

My self I will use top quality synthetic oil, either Amsoil or Redline in it just to be on the safe side. My wife’s 06 2.7L takes 5w20 and others use 5w30. If yours can use 5w30 then Amsoil might be the way to go for you as it's about the same price (if you become a Preferred customer) as cheap (hydro cracked dino oil) Mobile One and yet it's twice as good being its true synthetic oil.

I am not understanding the part I bolded. Are you saying that Mobil 1 is a hydrocracked dino oil?

 

Why yes I'm saying it is hydro cracked dino oil, that is unless they have made changes that no one knows about.

 

Mobil 1 is a true synthetic and has always been a Group IV oil just like Redline and Amsoil.

 

Unfortunatly, DBLR is in error....
Mobil 1 is completely Synth and not related to any one of the two types of base crude.
This has always been the case with this product.
You will also find plenty of writes on the sludge problem, but start here, as they will most likly be the driving force behind a possable class action law suite.
