always shoot RAW.
especially for autos.. because depending on the light, your colors wont come out accurate.
If your shooting at sunrise/sunset (optimal time) then the suns light changes over the coarse of a few minutes. So unless you calibrate your white balance every 15 min or so.. things wont come out great.
plus it gives you more flexibility to work with in case the back park of a car comes out underexposed or something... you can create 2 different photos using the same file, adjust each image (one darker/one lighter) and then use photoshop to blend the two.
thats what i did with the shot underneath these words.
there is no way possible to get my black truck properly exposed and still have any blue left in that sky... it would have been washed out.. not to mention the ground.
the shot below is actually about 6 versions of the same shot exposed differently and edited together

umm.. you dont even need a 5mp camera to do the job. the photos will not be printed out on anything bigger than a wall calender.
a 3.1 megapixel camera will put out a file 2048x1536, while at 150dpi you'd get a photo almost 14" wide and 10" high. Im not sure the quality of these photos coming out (300dpi?) or the size.. but even iphone cameras can do the job with the right set up and eye.
The most important thing is lighting. if you can get up right before the sun rises.. you would eliminate the shadows from under the side mirrors and many reflections.
photography is all about light..

thanks 318...and doc i use a 12mp kodak m381 for all my shoots ...never thought about editing them in ps...i guess i could use that to balance out pics of coarse the camera raw function allows you to manipulate certain aspects along with a total b&w pic....im gonna have to play with ps and pics of my truck not just fantasy graphics but actual color enhancing....thanks and if you have any tips feel free to email me...thanks....
