I broke the oil pan...
I was going down the road yesterday and "accidently" ran over a spiked piece of asphalt in the road were the city was doing some construction. I was in the left hand lane and swerved toward the curb to keep from getting a flat tire. The piece of debris wasn't very tall or wide, but enough to gouge a hole in that pan next to the left front steer tire on the driver's side. I pulled over and looked under the hood to find lots of red fluid leaking out (which I guess was the transmission fluid).
Someone please help as this is my only ride to work and back. My Dad grew up around cars and knows lots more than I do but we don't know if it'd be fixed just by replacing the pan, repair costs, or how much damage might have been done to the transmission.
EDIT: I forgot to add what car I had. It's a 1990 Dodge Spirit V6.

a piece of asphalt broke the pan? that sounds a little far fetched.. does the car still drive? ya need to find out EXACTLY where the fluid is coming from.. might wanna check and make sure you didnt pull a half shaft out of its seating.. with the jerk of the wheel.. its possible..
You need to drop the tranny pan and make sure the damage was only skin deep. If so, get a new tranny pan, 4 qts of ATF+4 and some Permatex Right Stuff sealant. Start by adding2.5 quarts, then check and add as necessary. Once it's warm and reads full, you're on your way.

It might not have been asphalt. I'll be honest; I don't know WHAT the hell it was! Just sort of like a pointed pyramid black chunk of something.
I have two jobs and get a simultaneous day off from both about once every two months.
A few months back I spent an entire saturday calling every junk yard within 30 miles looking for a left turn signal assembly for my mom's durango and didn't find a single one and ended up having to buy it from the dealer anyway.
If I have to, I can ask my girlfriend to go to the dealer for me and get the part, but I think sending her to the junk yard with a tool box is a little bit to ask.

I know how rediculous it sounds but I swear it's true! I knew it was coming out of the pan since I checked right away and could see the gash plus the fluid basically pouring from that area.

moe in wichita ks. i would have strightened the pan with a hammer. then weld the hole shut. check for leaks with water, dump out the water and put the pan back on truck. not a big deal.
