Default help please.. old piece of crap

Hey all.. i know.. this is a DODGE forum.. but i need some help.. this is the only ford i own.. and i need it running.. getting another one isnt an option.. i have a 1985 ford f-350 with a 7.5 carburated engine... this is my wrecker... i bought it about 2 months ago.. ran great.. yes.. past tense.. RAN great.. its sluggish as hell.. backfires constantly.. i have replaced the carburator.. adjusted it to the best of my know how.. replaced distributer (because i broke the original trying to set the timing) .. got the timing reset.. replaced rotor.. cap.. and cap adapter.. and it STILL runs like hell.. when its idling.. it 'putts' is the best way i can explain it.. burns gas something fierce.. if im at the back of the truck.. it burns my eyes its burning so much fuel.. when i drive.. good lord this is comical to a point.. it will give alot of small backfires.. will do this all the time.. unless.. i put the petal to the floor... when i do that.. the truck will backfire.. and go like a raped ape.. until i let off.. then its back to putting .. and doing its normal.. this truck has NO power.. and once its warmed up.. it dont even want to idle.. any ideas would be great.. i bought it 2 months ago.. and done put 500 bucks into it.. hard to make money with my wrecker when all it does is sit in the driveway and look pretty

If this has a lot of miles on it or just alot of hours on it the timing chain may have jumped teeth causing no power.

i was thinking the same.. but when i put the timing light on it.. it says its still where i set it..
will this hold true? i guess if the timing chain is stretched.. it could do that when its under stress it goes off of time..

Ok, well if you say its back firing alot it has to be the timing to an extent because you say it won't stay at idle n just die on ya. Make sure the wires are seperated so no cross arching is going on. Have somebody keep the truck running while you spray some water on the plug wires to see if any arching is going on and maybe need to replace them. But if you know they are old just get a new set. Anything other thingI can think is going out of timing like you mentioned possibly being too advanced because the most you want to advance any engine is I think 34 degrees.

SomethingI missed you said was the chain being stretched, that could be one of the problems too.

yes.. it is fixed now.. replaced timing chain.. distributer.. cap.. rotor.. carburator (twice) dont ask.... fuel lines.. water pump... radiator.. hoses.. thermostat.. starter.. and a few other things i cant think of now.. all in all it runs great now.. compared to what it was.. all i need to do now is get the timing fine tuned.. i timed it with the light.. but its still tapping at higher rpm's .. and yes.. it has oil..

I'd do an oil flush might have some crud in the oil passages causing the ticking (low oil pressure)
