Default dodge ram 1500 trranny problems

I just got this 2001 Dodge ram 4x4 1500 5.9l v8 sport. It has 53000 miles on it d the tranny just went out. Iv heard that these trannys go out quite often. Is there anything I should replace while its being rebuilt so this doesnt hapen again? WHat the common probalems with these? I know when I had the tranny in my mustang rebuilt I had them replace the bands/clutches with kevlar, a different valve body, a different set of planetries and add more clutches is the drum so it woul hold up to hard driving. Anything like that exsist for the dodge?

Status: offline Gentlemen, for all of those on here who disagree that the Dodge transmissions are not at all very well built, I counter with the fact my father owns a shop here in South Florida. He has 4 tranny techs and 4 bays specifically for rebuilding trannys - without a doubt, the number one transmission he has to rebuild is on Dodge trucks and vans! There are 4 to 5 a week which come in, but they never come back because they leave here with some important differences than how they left the manufacture. first and formost, he ALWAYS adds an exterior tranny cooler in front of the radiator. If the customer refuses to have the cooler added, he tells them to take the truck elsewhere. Heat kills the dodge tranny like nothing else, they are extremely prone to failure at the slightest raise in temp, and the extra cooler lowers the fluid temp dramatically. second, all leave here with an an inline filter. The filter in the bottom of the pan clogs too rapidly and easily, so on the cooler lines running to the radiator, one line will have an extra filter. and last, ATF-3 is crap! You must use ATF-4 or synthetic. He uses a synthetic fluid only automotive shops can buy, but Amsoil will do just as well if you don't want to pay the stealership money for ATF-4. One important point you all need to remember when driving your dodge, is NEVER go into reverse without putting the truck into "drive" first. Dodge, in all their ignorance, decided not to have the pump operating on the tranny's until the vehicle is placed into gear. On other makes, if you take one of the cooler lines off from the tranny while the engine is running and the tranny in park, fluid will still shoot out across the room. On Dodge's, the pumps only work when the tranny is in gear. So if you start up the truck after it has been sitting a while and the fluid has drained back out of the torque convertor, if you go straight to "reverse", there is a second of two before the fluid makes back around. Always put your foot on the brake, place the tranny in "drive" then wait a second or two, then either go into reverse, or simply continue in drive. either way, always let the truck sit for a second or two in gear before letting the tires actually rotate.

This was posted in another form but it gave me some insite to the whole tranny thing. Hope it helps

With the pump not "operating on the tranny's until the vehicle is placed into gear",how long would it take till the tranny over heated and seized running in neutral. How much larger than the internal filter are those external filters.

I have recently had my trans rebuilt two weeks ago for record, and the manager of the shop was telling me that dodge transmission will pump fluid when in neutral. I will have to ask about this reverse or park situation. As for the external filter here is one from the same place that I have a external cooler from, http://www.bulkpart.com/Merchant2/me...de=temperature
I will be putting this filter on my truck this weekend

One note to this ,If you put on a transmission cooler ,make sure you use the proper hoses. The ones that come with most coolers are junk. After a while they will clog the filters and cause the problem you want to avoid. This happened to me on a Plymouth. It was caught in time but it sure was close to doing some real damage.

I just had the trans built in my truck as well. In the rebuilding stage I added the following- #1 most important- transgo shift kit. It firms up the shift and increases line pressure. This will help your trans live a long health life. Replace you pressure regulator valve and mannual valve with the sonnax pieces. These will allow the pump to run fluid through the trans in park and won't let the converter drain back. Upgrade the o.d. planetary to a 5 pinion as the stock is only 4. These are available from Dacco trans parts. lastly add the largest trans cooler you can find. You may want to remove the check valve in the trans cooler line. I removed mine do to the fact that it stuck and thats why I had to rebuild.

That is TOTALLY false!!!
If it were true you would burn-up a transmission by letting it idle too long!!!
the delayed enguagement is from slow solinoids NOT lack of pressure!!!
you must use ATF4 ONLY & make sure they back flush the trans cooler.
