Hi Pamala,

What are you driving?

I believe if you turn the key to the "on" position but not to far where it Starts you normally would hear your fuel pump engage with a whirrr sound. Try it now and listen if you hear anything.

(Anyone can correct me if I'm wrong.)

Is the sound you hear coming from the gas tank?
Does it kick or back fire when you try to start?

Basically if you are not getting gas to the carb. (which your dad said he didn't smell anything) probably is fuel pump, if there is gas getting there and it still doesn't start could be a coil?
I know the fuel pump is in the tank, and without putting a meter on the line to measure fuel pressure I can't really help.
But those are my first two thoughts.

With Ford if you can hear the fuel pump most of the time its not the fuel pump i have an 89 f350 that breaks down all the time ... You need to see if you have spark at the plugs if not check the coil, cap, and rotor

Take one of the plugs out and hook it to the plug wire then ground the plug to the block. Now without touching the plug or wire have someone try to start the car. If you see a little spark fron the plug, then you know you have spark. usually when a vehicle won't start you are not getting fuel or spark. Also with the key in the on position there should be what looks like a tire valve on the top side of the motor on the fuel rail, press the pin in the center of the valve like you were trying to deflate a tire. If gas sprays out you have fuel pressure to the rail.
