clogged heater core, radiator. Bad vacum control on the heater controls. Maybe a bad water pump, but I doubt it. I would flush the heater core

When your on the gas the RPM goes higher and hence the water pump runs at a faster speed moving more water.

most likely will just need a good flushing out. anyone think the thermostat might be stuck open and its just taking a lot longer for the car to heat up at idle? or does it get cold rather soon after coming to a stop from a drive as well?

my intrepid used to do the same thing. check on top of thermostat housing there should be a bleeder vavle. open it and bleed the air out of system. if you get air coming out of it its a air lock. these new systems wont move water thru heater core if air is in the system

bleed air out of system and make sure your coolant level is correct. I have seen this problem before and found that if you are just a couple quarts low this will happen. In my cases its been with the 2.7 liter v-6
