It's true... the Duraslack is more powerful than the Powerstroke and Cummins... when mated with the Allison automatic, otherwise, with a manual, its not.
Engine - HP@RPM - Torque@RPM (Displacement, Valves per cylinder)
Stroker - 325@3300 - 570@2000 (6.0L V8, 4 valves per cylinder)
Duraslack with Allison - 360@3200 - 650@1600 (6.6L V8, 4 valves per cylinder)
Duraslack with Manual - 300@3000 - 520@1600 (6.6L V8, 4 valves per cylinder)
Cummins - 325@2900 - 610@1600 (5.9L I6, 4 valves per cylinder)
Tell your dad to go with the Cummins... after all, the whole idea in buying a work truck is to get something that will last.

They all have pretty good power. However, in the field of work, you look more for something that will last. As HemiMan said, the Duramax won't last as long as a Cummins.

Those new Duramax's are fast as ****, but they wont last as long as the Cummins. Aluminum heads and block shouldnt be part of a diesel engine.

Ok, lets try and have at it here.
Why shouldnt aluminum be part of a diesel engine? Aluminum is not as durable as iron. Cummins has an iron block if I'm not mistaken.
The Duramax is a V-8 design. The Cummins a an I-6 design. The cummins has less moving parts, and an Iron block, so it is more reliable.
And about having a 1 ton truck for speed, a modded diesel truck will leave a gas truck in the dust.
Diesels are built for longevity and mpg.
The performance figures of the Duramax.....
I've seen a test where a Crew Cab 3500 4x4 Dually Silverado with the Duramax went 0-60 in 8.4 and the Quarter Mile in 16.5.
