Default 2.5L to 4.0L Engine Swap

I picked up a 94 Cherokee SE 4-dr 4wd 5-Speed with 2.5L which gets great gas mileage but i've find that 4th & 5th sometimes 3rd gear to be useless when driving on any surface that's not level, so i'd like to know what i'd need to do to rip out the I4 an drop in I6 in it's place.

Thanks for input, Mike

its possible as many have done it. it can get expensive and time consuming. instead, why dont you re-gear it. depending on what gears are in it now and what size carrier you have all you gotta do is get a ring and pinion set, and the install kit. if you gotta go up a carrier size thats no big deal, just a a lil bit more cost. you can get a front and rear R+P set with installation kits for less than $500. you can install it yourself or expect to pay someone about 5-8 hours of labor to do both axles.

My cherry's 100% stock at moment, well almost stock i have cragar v-5 steel wheels & general grabber at/2. I'll look into re-gearing my truck, i'd like to do swap but the 4 garage's i asked said it's gonna run about $4000-$6000 an take 1-2weeks.

i have done gears myself, but if you dont know exactly what you are doing then take it to a good shop.

do me a favor and go out to the rear axle of your jeep and on the differential there is a metal tag bolted onto the diff cover, it has the model number and the gear ratio stamped into it. do the same for the front and lemme know what they say. according to my charts there are so many combos that till i know what you have i cant give advise.

you should have a Aisin-Warner AX5 5-speed manual and either a New Process NP231 "Command-Trac", part-time only, 2.72:1 ratio with low range or New Process NP242 "Selec-Trac", full-time/part-time, 2.72:1 ratio with low range. which one do you have?

When i first got my jeep i looked it over to see if had any damage an well looking it over i noticed that all the id tags where either rusted beyond readable or completely gone, the guy i bought it from said it was his son's an that he never took care of it an that when he left for 2 years ago college it was parked behind garage an covered with a trap.

thanks for link, i don't live in a hilly area the only real hills around here a 5year old on pedal bike could handle, it's real acceleration an keeping speed that are getting to me since once you drop 5 miles below speed limit some @$$hole honks the horn an rides you bumper till you either change lanes, pull off or slam on brakes.
