Jeep output speed sensor?
I had posted earlier about my 1999 jeep shifting weird and the check engine light pointed to the output speed sensor. Which turns out is a common problem. My question is first Autozone sold me a sensor but apparently they have sold the wrong one to other people before, the one they sold me has an electrical plug on one side then just threads on the other, If i understood right its supposed to have a larger top piece for bolting it onto the car not just threads? (it would be nice to know before I pull out the old one and realize i don't have anything to replace it with) Also, I was wondering if driving my car with the bad speed sensor in it and it's somewhat choppy shifting is really bad for the car/transmission itself? I don't have the tools with me (im at school) to replace the part and am wondering if a 2 and a half hour drive home during thanksgiving would be bad (i wouldnt use the car much until then maybe several trips here and there). any input is appreciated thanks.
If I owned an auto parts store and you came in for a speed sensor, I would ask what one are you looking for? Autozone will sell you something that they have, not something you need and they don't employ the brightest bulbs on the tree. You have several speed sensors on your jeep, some for the ABS and located at the wheels and a speed sensor on the trans. that is located on the output shaft of the transmission. That is the one that set off your failure code. visit www.napaonline.com and click on sensors after you punch in your jeep and you will find 3 pages of sensors, you will be looking for a VSS number for veih. speed sensor , you will also find numbers for your wheel speed sensors that Autozone sold you
