2000 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4.0 engine knock/Tap
My 2000 has developed a knock/Tap in the engine. At first it would only knock/Tap when first started now it is all the time.As engine warms it does get less noticable. I thought it was coming from the top end and figured lifters. The mechanic says it from the bottom end and I will need to replace/rebuild engine. This engine has 203,000 miles.
I paid 700.00 for this jeep 3 years ago, with 130,000miles. It was a company vehicle, well maintained. Found an engine rebuilder here that
I can get an engine from for 1500.00 with a 3 year/36,000 waranty, 850.00 to swap engines. Is this a reasonable price?
What do you guy's think?
Thanks
Michael

I will Master Tech, The engine will be done by Carolina Machine engines. I have never dealt with them but locally they seem to have a good rep. In the next week or so they may be doing a 2003, 5.7 for me or at least the heads. The heads should be pulled today so I will know more later. I am hoping for a head job on the 5.7 then I can get the engine for the Cherokee.
