90 Cherokee tranny question
so i'm looking at buying a 1990 Jeep Cherokee 4.0L with a bad tranny its auto... and i have access to a 92 jeep grand cherokee 4.0L auto tranny....are they the same trannys or ?
There is no such thing as a 1992 Grand Cherokee, it wasn't introduced until 1993. But the '93s had the same Aisin AW-4 transmission. Should bolt right up. Might just have to move/fab up some mounts, but I think that'd be about it...
Actually they were built in 1992, 93-98 is the common consesus but when you buy parts for them you see model years 92-95 and 96-98 for the respective parts.
Im not sure what kind of transmissions the cherokee's use tho so i cant help you there. I know the early 92-93's used the AW4 automatic transmission before moving to the 42RE

thanks for all the info-
The jeep cherokee was a XJ and the grand cherokee ZJ was offer in 1993. What most people don't, If the AW4 transmission goes into limp in. There is a fuse for transmiision in the glove box. Do you know which transmission you have?
Do you know what transmission that is coming out of the grand cherokee? Is it also a AW4 or the 42RH or 46RH transmission? If its a AW4 trans, you should be okay.
