JeepsThe tough off road capability of ANY Jeep model from the Wrangler to the fully loaded Grand Cherokee keeps this cousin of Dodge the king of every hill.
I'm here on this forum today not for my awesome Dodge Cummins, but my younger brothers God awful 03' Jeep Grand Cherokee. Man this thing is rough.
I'm just digging into the brakes when this happens (see pics), what the hell is up with that? Is there a "C" clip that let go in the pumpkin? Also is there supposed to be an outer bearing and seal on the end of the axle? It appears gear oil has been seeping out all over. I would appreciate the help guys, he's a college kid - trying to save him some dough.
Also, what would cause uneven brake pad wear? The front drivers, and rear passenger pads are totally wiped - the others have a good chunk of meat. Is this because of the sliding axle, or air in the lines? TIA
That doesn't look like it just happened! May want to look up an exploded view of the axle. This will show you how it's put together. You may get lucky and only need a new bearing and seal.
I do believe the bearing there is pressed on.... and most of it is gone. Need to find that..... Seal still appears to be in the end of the axle tube, though it is most certainly trashed.

It certainly didn't! My ding dong brother has been driving it around "making noise" for 2 months. Then he finally tells me and says he needs brakes.. which he did..

You are correct. I did end up finding the parts needs and got it all put back together. There was a bit of scoring on the axle tube, but oh well. Axle lost 2 quarts of fluid and there's a chance metal is in the pumpkin anyways. It sounds much better and drives pretty decent now, if the axle blows - junkyard swap out!
