Default timing belt issue???

I think that i might have a problem here. I have an 89 EFI NA engine, which takes the round tooth cam belt. Well, i recently bought an 84 2.2 block, which i plan on putting my head on. However, the crank pulley (or the one the cam belt goes on).... does it call for a square tooth cam belt? I was curious and worried... and i didnt know what to do... any help would be great!

Just run the square tooth gear off the old head on the new one. But be careful of that setup since the your old 84 block got different head/pistions than 86 newer stuff. Your engine will have more compression with that head.

If the timing sprockets don't match (one round tooth & one square tooth) the timing will never be correct and will constantly change.... I learned that the hard way...

You can change the cam or crank sprocket to which ever block you want, they are interchangeable, but they have to match.

Since were on the subject of timing belts and cam gears, I heard somewhere that some performance company makes a cam gear for the 2.2 and 2.5 that has one less tooth. They made it that way so you could shave the head down and not have tension issues on the belt. Did anybody else hear of this?

One less tooth would throw off the timing in about 4 rpm of the motor. What they do make is a shorter belt and or larger tensioner.

Shorter belt is the best fix for a shaved cylinder head.

You might be able to get the shorter belt or tensioner from http://www.fwdperformance.comor possibly NAPA
