Transmission troubles
Well, I figured it was only a matter of time, you see, I dont technicly own a Dodge Shadow, my dad drives one, and he wants to get a new car soon, to replace the shadow, thats when I was plannin on taking it. But it just started having transmission problems with it.
Dad says it wont shift smoothly into third or first, and struggles, because it wont downshift goin up hills. This is scareing me pretty bad, I'am not sure wether thats a bad sign or a terrible sign. Does it take much to swap a new transmission in, yourself? thanks

Truthfully (in my opinion) no. Its fairly easy to do, put the car up on jack stands and pull your front end apart to get the drive axles out. Make sure to put a bucket under where they pull from the trans, it will start to pour tranny fluid out. Unhook all your wires (speed sensor and back up light plug) as well as unhooking the shift cable and kick down cable. Next put a jack under the motor (perferably near the trans, this is to cause it from falling down and binding with the trans) get a tranny jack, or decent floor jack under the trans as you start to unbolt all the bolts that hold it to the motor (also pull the side trans mount, may be different if its a 5 Speed). After you get all the bolts out start to let both jacks down just a bit to get some clearence above the trans so you can slide it towards the drivers side, once you have enough clearence slide it (or pry it with a prybar or something from the motor). Pull the 4 bolts that hold the the torque converter to the flywheel and your done, slowly let it down while still sliding it towards the drivers side as much as you can, basically do the oposite to get the new/rebuilt one in. I belive the haynes manual explains a little about this aswell, Not too sure right off and dont know where mine is, you can pick one up at your local automotive store for about 15 bucks. Hope this helps.

Last time I checked, the Haynes manual covers this pretty well.
Thanks guys I appreciate it. Update to the story, my dad bought a new car today, a 02' Cavalier, so the car is mine now, after all these years of waitin, but those friggen trannys. Theres a guy who owns an 89' Dodge Shadow, said it has a working transmission, but it leaks, not sure what the leak would be, do you guys? and would this be compatible with my 2.2L?
And I probably should ask this, I have my beginers, and I drove the Shadow down to my grandmothers the other day with mom, to store it (we have no more room in our yard) and the shadow still runs, shifting into 2nd gear, it feels like a standard, it has troubles, and sorta jolts the car, then gets into 2nd. Dad says when he drove it, the gears wouldnt shift, he had to put it in neutral, and the drive, and it would eventually get into gear. And it would slip alot. I hate to ask it, but is this a sign that the transmission is going? or needs some repairs/fluids? We put Lucas transmission fluid in, this summer.

I would have a tranny shop look at it first before you determine if it needs a new transmission.
If you're not to car savvy, It may not be worth getting done, because you could probably get a decent running turbo shadow ES for what it would cost for a new tranny + labor.

Exactly how many miles is on this Shadow? It depends on which transmission the guy has. If he has a 3-speed A413 transmission, it should work, if it is a A604/41TE 4-speed ultradrive I doubt it. Have a transmission shop look at your car. That transmission is supposed to be a pretty good transmission.
Yeah, King Calibra, you have a good point. Its got about 184 000 kilometers on my Shadow, but I'am not sure how many are on the 89' or the 87', buddy says the 89' has a good working tranny, just it leaks? lol, he seems to think its the pan leaking, what do you guys think?
If the transmission is indeed dieing on me, then I may not get it replaced, I dont want it re-built because I hear that costs over $1000 for some, and my dad says the Shadow is'nt worth anymore then $1500. Theres a Dodge Dakota for sale, in Sackville NS (near where I live) it was for sale at $1000 last summer, but its dropped to $695, I looked at it once, but I might go take another look at it, I'am in the market for a truck, but I want to fix the Shadow, if I can for cheap enough.

Hard to belive that it would cost 1000 to get it rebuilt, my friend got his done (99 neon) for about 350 bucks. We pulled it and dropped it off at the trans shop, and put it back in ourselves though.
