My car Blows Black smoke it doesn't smell like oil. I got code 23 and proceded to fix it. "throttle Body temperture sensor was replaced. It contiunes with the problem. Has anybody come across this? First of all welcome to the site. Check the fuel injector, i had the injector o-ring dissapear on my 2.2 Shadow and my car idled rough and was fine during acceleration. And that would explain the black smoke, it is running too rich. Or you have too much fuel pressure and it is putting more gas in the motor than it should.

Do you think it might be lack of fuel?? I did a swap from the Original 2.2 to a 2.5 Engine. Just Engine and tranny was Swapped, everything else is stock. Thank you again

Absolutely, my friend has a Beretta race car and he put in a larger engine and it was stumbling because of inadequate fuel pressure. Of course the 2.5 is larger than the 2.2 so it should require more fuel to keep it running smooth. But that still wouldnt explain why it shoots black smoke out the pipes. Hmm.. I will look around and try to find you more help.

The only thing you should have to change would be the sbec or engine computer. The 2.5 got a different timing and fuel curve then a 2.2. Also which year did you get the 2.5 from. Certain years got different fuel pressures. You only have that problem if you didn't use the 2.2 intake or you got a 2.5 intake before 91. before the system ran 14.5 psi and after is 39 psi. So if you know the engine intake from 91 or newer just swap the computer. If it from 91 and older then you need to swap the trottle body and computer. I got both from 2.5 tbi auto.

My old engine is from 89 my new one is 93. I did found some vaccum hoses disconnected from the carb to the purge canister. So I happly replaced them before turning the car on. Now I tried to crank it and it wont start[&o]. Checked for codes and I get 51 ( fuel/air Lean) and 23 Throttle body temperture sensor....[>:] Any IDeas?? Thank you

This Afternoon I decided to take the sparkplugs out. To my surprise the plugs where black and smelled like gas. After Cleaning them up, the car started. I ran the car for 3 miles til it started hesitating again. Why would the car start fine, and afterwards just start Surging???[:@]

Note: Dont think its the fuel filter, if it was it would be doing it from the start.

If your spark plugs smell like gas and are black you are definantly getting to much gas and also maybe not anough air so check your intake and maybe an air filter change is in the future. Fuel curve maye be all screwy.

Hey koqui sounds like what I was experiencingncing with my shadow what I did was change the fuel regulator and the shadow seems to be running fine. Also one of my friends had recommended me have a look at the automatic Idle speed motor located on the throttle body Make sure that the AIS is compressed to one inch or less. hope this helps.

Shadowman, my 2.2 is simmler to what he's describing, I turn it on in the morning, when its kind of cold, or even when its warm out, and it chugs, and idles rough, and dark smoke comes ou the tailpipe, but when it gets warmed up it goes away after awhile. I got the distributor, and plugs/wires changed, but that didnt help, I thought it was the compression. Do you think the injector o-rings are warn on my 2.2?
