Default New Owner/First Question

I love this car!!! It started off, last weekend, by me trading in my Chevy Avalanche to get something a little more economical. Man, was I ever wrong. I mean, I'm sure that this car gets a lot better gas milage than the AV, but I wont be able to realize it until I can keep myself from hammering on the pedal so much. I'm 35 years old and this feels like I'm back at 17 with the Firebird all over again. I have this desire to go out cruising whatever strip is available, looking for a race. Please don't laugh if that is not "IN" anymore.
Anyway, my question is this. The front end, with WOT in 1st and 2nd seems to be pretty unstable. It kinda feels like the front tires are coming off the ground, causing the steering to get really loose. What are my options, as a first mod, to fix this. I want to eventually add more power, but I can't see doing anything else until I get the front end taken care of.

Dave.

I am assuming you have an 04 model year?? congrats!! I love mine!! what color did you end up getting??

You haven't owned a lot of front-wheel-drive cars have you?? The first words out of the mouth of a friend of mine who drove my car who has only owned rwd cars was "how the heck do you drive this thing??" welcome to "torque steer"... the first thing is just getting used to this... learning how to "handle" it... for "cheap" fixes, there really aren't any short of motor mounts which will help reduce the wheel hop... but as far as the "floating" feeling... new tires and a possible upgrade to the whole transaxle - which wouldn't be cheap at all!

don't worry... I go out almost daily looking for people to race... I love driving and love just "cruising" around... you'll fit right in here

Yes, it is a 2004 and its E. Blue. Now that I think about it, the vehicles that i've owned over the past ten years have been 4wd all-terrain type vehicles. I have owned FWD cars, but nothing anywhere close to this kind of power. I have been working on getting used to the "torque steer" but sometimes it can get a bit hairy. I am definitely going to install the motor mount inserts, as I think this should definitely help. I was fortunate enough to get a lesson on this cars "wheel hop" and the shifter **** coming off all in one quick start off the line yesterday. Kinda embarrassing when your showing off the car to friends. Oh well, all the better reason to get started right away with the modding.

04's come with it stock

the wheel hop isn't going away anytime soon....it sucks but that's the reality of this car. don't bother with the motor mounts, get replacement mounts. i have the inserts and it's better, but i still get a lot of wheel hop. a new set of dogbones is really a much better option. psi-fi has a traction set up in the works that will basically completly eliminate wheel hop...it should be released in about 2-3 weeks. i've seen the system in person, and it's very effective. i'll be headed down there to pick mine up as soon as they tell me i can

to help keep the nose down a little consider springs, or if you have the cash, coilovers. this will help lower both ends of the car, and give you more stability. the rear end is more unstable than the front, and driving at high speed you need to be careful as it can begin to drift (if you go over 140 the rear gets really light and is all over the place, it really needs to be lowered!).

Very happy is good. yet another satisfied SRT-4 customer. Yeah it needs help in the wheel hop reduction department. Definately get some replacement motor mounts. I haven't done that one yet but in the state of virginia I can't drive fast anywhere. I could do it all day in california. Congrats on your car. There are alot of parts you can get for this car now so possiblities are endless. Check out www.modernperformance.com and you can do a search for srt-4 performance parts and find alot of sites. Good luck!
