Gump, I think if you look back far enough you should find a posting where the PVO people talked about the design of the SRT-4 and how they designed the engine so the oil would not pool in one place after the engine was shut off. Many other turbo cars DO have this problem though, so a turbo timer would be a good investment for them.....

Great info. I think that I will just let it cool down when I drive it hard.

This is my first turbo. What is the exact reason that you have to cool the turbo down this way. What will happen if you don't cool it down properly. Sorry for the dumb question.
OK, hear it is, Turbo 101:

The impeller (basically it's a small fan) turns many times faster than the engine, under boost it can rotate at well over 10,000 RPM's. This plus being attached to the exhaust creates tremendous heat. If you are running the car hard and shut it off without letting it cool down any it has no way to disipate the heat and the heat will continue to build up after you shut it off. It is this extremely high heat that can and will coke the oil in the turbocharger, this means that it will burn the oil into a dry powder/ash. Since the engine isn't running to keep pumping the oil through the turbo, the oil that remains in it will become ash. This powder/ash doesn't work to well as a lubricant and a dry turbo will become damaged just like an engine will if it is started without oil on the parts at start up. This can also, and will if it happens too often, cause the turbo to seize up. This is why you let the turbo cool down before shutting it off if you have been running it hard.

Under normal driving conditions the turbo is at a far lower operating temperature and it will not get nearly as hot on shut down, it will not get much hotter than it's operating temperature. Under normal driving conditions there is no need to let it cool off, it is just about as cool as it can get anyway. There is however an exception to this, freeway driving. If you have been on the freeway and your destination is right off the freeway, you will need to let it cool off some before shutting it off since this is almost the same as driving it hard. If you have gotten off the freeway and you hit a red light or two before reaching your destination, then your OK to shut it off without the need to let it idle since it did that at the red lights.

This is very important to any and all turbocharged engines, but it is far more important with one that is not intercooled as they stay and operate at higher temperatures than ones that are intercooled. Another thing you can do to help keep your turbo in perfect health is to replace the regular conventional oil with synthetic oil. Synthetic oil can withstand far higher temperatures than conventional oils. Synthetics will also reduce, if not eliminate, engine wear, lower operating temperatures, increase horsepower and torque and increase fuel mileage.

Usually I will let the engine idle for 15-30 seconds before shutting it off regardless, but that is just me. It also depends on where the temperature is at at the time, if it is above 200 deg. I will usually wait until it drops below 200 deg. If I just got off the freeway I will wait until the temperature peaks and then I will shut it off after it drops, right before it starts to go back up (this usually takes 1-3 minutes depending on the temperature outside). This is when it is at it's coolest point and is the optimal time to shut it off. If I have been running it hard or taken it down the track, I will pop the hood and let it cycle 2-3 times before I shut it off. Everyone does it different and has their own ways in which they do it, this is just how I do it.

I would recomend hard or or not hard that is me! Apexi makes a good cheap one for $80 simple to use. Dont go out and buy one that is over a $100 they all do the same thing LET THE CAR RUN. I have 2 kids and they dont have the Pasiants to sit for 3 min or more.

I would recomend also cause the oil gets hot and if it does not cool down it will get hard in the lines

That you do... I'm also disappointed to learn that the oil chills in the intercooler...I'm gonna have that taken care of while Lucius is out of comission.
