First of all, the car doesn't like snow and barely tolerates rain. Before you start modding, make sure you either get an oil catch can or that there is one already istalled. You'll be surprised at the amount of oil you get.

It gets blown by the PCV valve and will collect in your intercooler and other places.......it's a very simple fix, there are plenty of postings here and a sticky at the top of the section to help you out.....

17? Good luck with your insurance.

You might want to consider some motor mounts to cut down on wheel hop, but that really depends on how you drive. Performance mods are a matter of personal choice, do you want better handling or a faster car......getting both can be very tricky and I have yet to meet someone who can look me in the eye and say they are 100% satisfied with their SRT-4 after they heavilymodded it.......when you mod any vehicle, you take something away from one area and change it/modify it for a purpose that it wasn't designed for. The SRT-4 does accept a lot of mods and that's a major reason it's so popular....

and as Dusty already said, an OCC is a must for the car if it dosent already have one. If you buy a used SRT w/o one, youll probably need to clean out your I/C and piping, maybe clean out the throttle body and intake manifold as well if it got in there.
If you plan on using it in inclement weather, you MUST get dedicated snow tires. The car is drivable in winter, but it is limited even with snow tires. if your keeping the 1st gen I would drive it in winter.
Personally, unless I knew the previous owner, I would want one that was Stock/near stock or one with a Mopar StageKit would be acceptable. There are plenty of morons out there who throw parts on w/o thinking everything through, running the risk of long-term internal damage. (i/e JC Whitney 'NOS' kit, upping boost too muchw/o upgrading fuel, etc)
as for upgrades it depends on what you want. toughen up the suspension a bit. if you want to tune, there are numerous options for upgrades. however, the Mopar Stage kits are great for plug-and-play upgrading. S2 is a decent gain without compromising dailydrivability. Dusty mentioned some motormounts, I never got them but many folks have and I probably should as well. Although I would suggest paying the balance down if your going to owe alot before getting mod happy, also taking out a little extra coverage for aftermarket parts if you dump alot of cash under the hood.
Good luck on the hunt! take your time and make sure your gettin what you reallywant!
ps, youll love the car!

should fit well then. yes, insurance is going to hit you rather hard at 17. Before taking out a long loan on one though, think it through. say a 5 year loan... is this car still going to be worth X amount every month when your 22? Just a thought (yes Im only 25 but I speak from experience there, learning the hard way)
