Default Is it OK to shift like this?

I usually press in the clutch to shift gears and/or go into nuetral, I noticed the other day that I could be in 5th gear and without pressing the clutch, grasp the shifter and put it into neutral!!! Is this a safe practice? Yes I know how to drive...Yes I can shift...No I do not go thru clutches like crazy! Just something I noticed and wondered if it was OK to do.

Thanks for the help

yeah, you can just pull it out of gear. i do it myself at times (then scald myself for it). but its probably not good on it, as it would be a little stressful as it disengages under

Yeah mine does that too. It's easy to do in any gear if you let the engine decelerate in that gear for a second. As long as it's not struggling to stay in as you pull it out and it pops out easily I don't think its doing any serious damage.

it is fine as long as your gentle. I will sometimes shift mine without using the clutch at all, through all gears, with the excetion of first of cousre. Before there were syncros, this was the general practice.

yes but now that we have synchros it shouldn't be done. you're putting a lot of unnecessary strain and wear on your transmission doing clutchless shifting.

Yeah I sometimes clutchless shift myself, but it's usually for the shock value of passengers riding in my car. It's kinda funny when I tell them I will shift into all gears with no clutch and they can't believe I can do it. I got pretty good at it when my stock clutch was shot. I agree with PSI chick though, it does put unnecessary strain on the tranny and really shouldnt be done in cars with synchros.

+1 There's a good chance your weakening the ends of the cogs and could eventually end up chipping/breaking your gears in the long run. Do your tranny a favor and use the clutch.
