Default Changing oil

how often you you do it? me i change it every 2k with mobil1 15w50 .. now i know what some people are gunna say its to thick and all that but ive used at the minimum 10w40 in every car ive besides 40w and above is the only turbo approved oil for the heat and the as hard as i drive thicker oil always helps and burns off less. beside the 5w30 the factory recomends is for colder climates and the reason they use 5w30 is beacuse of emmisions.. thinner oil uses less energy to move there for less strain on the motor. helps keep the tree huggers at bay. but where i live where its always at least 65+ mostly in the 70's and above i wouldnt use a thin oil in as much traffic and stop and go driving as i have to do here. thats just me tho eacth to there own i guess.

you might want to try reading a book on Oil... keeping the tree huggers at bay... dear Lord... ignorance is not bliss...

do you realize that synthetic oils can last well over 2000 miles... in fact they are developing oils that can last upwards of 30k miles. I still change my oil every 3k...

yes i relize that, in fact regular motor oil is good pretty much good after 3k miles its the aditives in the oil that break down(cleaning agents and what not) and if you want to run 5w30 go right ahead but i dont know anyone that i race with nor professinaly what uses that thin of oil when they drive that hard.. a friend of mine that owns a mazda shop (PRmotorsports) races for mazda and they use 20w50 in there rx-7's and miatias because thicker oil resists breakdown better at high heat, and there top mechanic (hector a very good friend of mine) has been building rotorys for 15-20 years now would never even think about runing that thin of oil in there car. I also know people for Robello(BRE datsun engine builder) and they run 10w40 for break in and 15w50-20w50 in there engines. you run 5w-30 in your car then pull the head off at 100k and see whos rings and bearing look better. Ive personally seen engines breakdown at Thunder Hill beacuse of the oil they ran just couldnt keep up with the stress and heat. and after 8 years or racing and building engines i think i know a lil about oil and how it afffects your egine.. so your going to run 5w30 on a engine with over 100k miles? i think not because you would be burning oil past the rings. so why do high performace cars recomend thicker oil than lets say a ulev civic (5w20)? hmm lets see. and why dont desiels run anything under 15w40? hmmm beacuse its to thin and cant keep up with the heat and stress of the motor.. the srt-4 barley passes emmisions stock so they needed every trick in the book to get it to pass like the higher temp thermostat when optimal engine range is in the 170-180 mark.. hmm yea im a idiot. well you can do what you want but me personaly im very **** about the mantanice of my cars. and to me running that thin of oil is just suicide on my motor. my friend on my base has a 03 srt-4 and has been running 5w30 in his car from day 1 and is still burning about half a quart between oil changes and i havent burned any oil scince my first 3k oil change.. i wonder why that is... he changed to 15w50 mobil1 and guess what no more burning! hmm yea i dont know what im taking about sorry ill just shut up.

I change mine, or should I say I have it changed at the dealership, somewhere between the 3 months and the 3,000 miles since I only drive around 6,000-7,000 miles a year. I use 5W30 Mobil 1 in the winter and 10W30 Mobil 1 in the summer. I run 10W40 Castrol GTX in my Roadrunner in the winter and 20W50 Castrol GTX in the summer. If I were to ever race my SRT-4 then I would run either 10W40 or 15W40 Mobil 1 in it.

First off, deisels don't run hotter than gas motors, they run cooler than gas motors, by several hundred degrees. A diesel running at full throttle for a long time will never heat up the exhaust manifold to the point of being orange, the srt-4, on the other hand will. Changing oil every 3000 miles, I won't say it is bad, it can't hurt, but my winter car has 186,000 on it and the oil gets changed every 1-2years, yes years, I am very forgetful and sometimes it goes probably 20,000+ per change. The car has always has mobil 1 10w40 or something, whatever is on hand. And guess what, it doesn't burn any oil, but when pushing it for long peoriods it will use some, but that is normal(90mph+ from a car that has an 85mph speedo). I think there is a thread where oil was disscussed.
My question is this, my srt has been sitting all winter and will be coming out in a month or so, oil was changed 1500 miles ago, mobile1, in august of 04, should I change it right away or wait. I know for my bikes they say that water and stuff will contaminate a sitting motor, but at 5 dollars a quart it and 20 to change it at the dealership, it gets pricey. My gut says to change the oil, my logic says to wait. Anybody got any advice. Anybody else in the same situatuion?

Running a thicker oil might cause some internal problems? Race motors have heavy duty oil pumps, but how thick of an oil can a stock oil pump handle? I know in some bikes the thicker oil can strip the gears on the oil pump? I would stick with whats recommended by the manufactuer.

change it. fresh oil will never hurt. i havent had any problems yet and i have 20k on my car and ive ran 15w50 from the first oil change.. desiels dont run as hot but they still run thermostats at 170-180 and still can get quite hot. if you dont want to spend the money tho dont i dont think the oil would be bad but it defentliy wouldnt hurt. then agian i live in a dry climate area so i havent had any problems with that sort of thing.
