For being almost 700lbs heavier....the Eclipse doesnt perform that badly. If they could shave the parts not needed to drop it down to the SRT-4 weight, it might be an even matchup. In its current configuration though, it gets owned by the SRT-4.....and for the record....I've driven both of these cars within the last 2 months.

The SRT-4 has it beat. In the Car & Driver article "Cheap Speed: Round 23" they had cars that have a base price not to exceed $25,000 and at least 200 horsepower or more and they had considered the new Eclipse, but they left it out saying,"The latest Mitsubishi Eclipse GT came close to making the cut, but the only staffer who'd driven the thing told us it was "more like a softly suspended tourer than a racer" and would thus be humiliated." The SRT-4 ACR was in that article and it bested all the other cars in almost every single performance test including, 0-60 MPH, 1/4 mile, top speed, braking, autocross course, etc. and this was against the Acura RSX Type-S, Subaru Impreza WRX, Chevy Cobalt SS Supercharged and Saturn Ion Red Line.
I'm not looking to start something RR... cause you have valid points and respect your opinion... but I am having trouble understanding something about your post... you believe C&D when they talk about the Eclipse being softly suspended tourer than a racer?? but you don't like it when they don't give the SRT the 1st place victory?? I'm not looking to start something, just seems a little... weird to me... maybe it's me... like I said, not trying to bash, just doesn't make sense to me...
I never claimed anywhere at all in my post to believe what they had to say about the new Eclipse or any other car for that matter, I simply used their quote as an example as to what they think about the car from someone that has driven it and can compare it to the other cars in that article. I also never claimed what they had to say about the cars was BS (they do tend to gloss over any faults or simply omit them when it comes to their beloved imports though), I have a problem with how they go about rating them. They have an article that is supose to be based on the cars performance being compared, yet they bring in stupid BS like cargo space and other such non-performance related crap to justify their giving the poorest performing cars' the top spot(s). This is also why they have really stupid BS at the bottom of their points sheet like "gotta-have-it-factor" and "fun to drive" and these two have huge points (25) attached to each one (there is more points given in just one of those than in any other single category and together they make up 1/5 of the entire points system[sm=wtf.gif][sm=WTFsgign.gif]) and these are simply personal opinion factors that can be used however they like. Any car could be way ahead in every way including all their other BS areas, yet loose out in the end simply based on these two parts that have absolutely no meaning to anything what so ever, except a way for them to give the top spots to whatever they want for and with no factual or realistic reasons.

That has been the only thing I've read about the Eclipse so far in a magazine, I usually just go look at the stats and performance data. I have seen the new Eclipses performance numbers and it looses to the SRT-4 all the way around. I like the way it looks and it is hindered by it's excessive weight, but regardless it still falls behind the SRT-4.

It would never even come close. I have seen a road test on it.

Another assignment flubbed my Mitsubishi.

Im a new member on the forums as of a few days ago. I agree the SRT-4 is a fast car. But I also find it halarious that you all are bashing the new Eclipse for how it looks. It may be the ugliest car on the road today. But do you all realize that your driving a a car that is a close 2nd in fugly? The neon has always been an ugly, weak, grocery getter. Dodge puts a turbo in it and all of the sudden you all claim its the greatest car in the world. Underneath the nice rims, stiffer suspension and the turbo, you should all remember......ITS STILL A FREAKIN NEON! !!

In my opinion, I think the SRT-4 is ten times better looking than the mitsubishi. Talk about ugly. But then again, I think the SRT is a great looking car. When they have been lowered and have wheels put on them, they look great.

I'm glad that dodge used the neon to make the srt-4. I think the neon is the last car that anyone would expect a manufacturer to make into the lightning fast beast that it is. Nothing surprises anyone more than a stock 13.8 et neon. I like it.

And,,,,a cobra is just a mustang
an evolution is just a Ralliart
An STI is just a WRX

What's the point of that?

If you REALLY want a sports car that is not something else, then lay out the bucks and buy a vette or something.
