Default bucking bronco

My new 04 (6K miles) seems to be doing more and more bucking every day. It is very noticeable in 1st and 2nd gear. Going off throttle at anywhere below 3K rpms makes the car feel like it was suddenly tied to a light post. The thing throws me back and forth like crazy. Careful clutchwork can prevent it but I am thinking i need new plug wires (still on the stock ones).

However, I have heard some people say that this car always does quite a bit of this in low gears at low speeds. Does this sound like a plug wire issue or do you think that would not really do much and I should just learn to live with it?

That is just how a high torque manual drives, learn to modulate better and it'll be minimized.

Replace the wires, anyway. The car will run better, for sure. The biggest difference you'll notice is that the lumpy idle will go away.

By modulate I assume you mean the clutch? You are right, I am still getting used to the high torque coming from a 93 miata. Like a 150 lb/ft jump. I do know how to drive a manual tranny pretty well though. It just seems so difficult, especially during rush hour traffic. First gear is crazy. No matter how light my touch is, going on and off throttle turns the car into a pissed off bull fresh out of the gates! Like i said, using the clutch more makes everything fine but i feel like i am doing too much slipping. Maybe that is just how this car has to be driven though. The Miata had absolutely no power until like 5K so it was easy to drive around slow and relaxed all day.

Sounds like you have the right idea. Unfortunately, this car is just not a fun car to drive at rush hour. We deal with this, though for the way it drives out of rush hour. I end up driving in 2nd a lot in traffic, when I can, but yeah - I slip the damn clutch all the time no matter what I do in traffic. Feels like I am going to wear out my throw out bearing, the frequency is pretty bad. Nature of the beast, though. I think it is a function of High torque as well as the massive t 850 tranny(at least it will handle 300 lb/ft without batting an eyelash).

Hi bep9904,
I had the same problem with my '04 around the same mileage. I took it to the dealer and he re-flashed my computer and it solved the problem. I now have 10k on it with the same plugs & wires but I am trying to find new ones around here with no luck. Will have to order them. Hope this helps.

There seems to be a lot of conflicting info on whether or not this is a normal thing. It really doesn't seem to be a clutch/transmission related thing because it will do it at any speed below ~ 35 and it does it with the clutch out. I will probably replace plug wires anyway just to see if this helps.

On a probably unrelated note, the car seems to now have a tendancy to make a rough grinding sound with some harsh drivetrain lash everyday when i leave work and the car has been sitting for 8+ hrs (never happens in the morning for some reason?). It happens with the clutch out and has happened both on decel and accel. It always does it only one time then drives fine. It sounds and feels like i am grinding a gear but it is not happening when i shift. Any idea what this could be?

Hmmmm...starting to sound like a short in your tps wire or an iac problem. when you have the car running - have someone jiggle the tps wires on the side of the throttle bidy and see if the problem duplicates itself.
