Part Specifications
Do you guys think the Mopar exhaust is good enough @ 2.5 in? I was thinking of going with a 3 in., since the 2.5 is obviously only 1/4 in bigger. I know it doesn't have all the bends and whatnot, so I'm sure it's better, I just wonder whether 3 would be better still. Also, does anyone happen to know if the stock pipe is mandrel bent? My '96 sohc neon had stock 2.5 in mandrel bent pipe, so I never even bothered replacing it (I did replace the muffler, though, of course).
Anyway, any thoughts?
Anyway, any thoughts?
Bigger is better, however it is more expensive. There are quite a few 3" exhausts out there for the SRT-4's, they usually go for $600-$1,200 for a full turbo back. If you plan on running over 300 horsepower, then you will be better off with the 3". If you plan on up to but not over 300 horsepower, then the 2.5" Mopar/Borla is just fine. The SRT-4's factory exhaust is 2.25" mandrel bent with 2 resonators and no muffler. A 1/4" doesn't sound like much when simply talking about it in a linear manner, but when it come to increasing the area of a circle it's alot more than what you might think.[sm=smiley2.gif]
The Mopar is a 2.5 stainless, mandrel bent. There's a vendor on SRTfroums, name of Scott, company name is MAXXFab. When I upgrade my O2 housing and downpipe (the biggest resrictions in the stock system) I'll be going with his pieces. He dynoed his two pieces on both a 3 inch and the Mopar on a car up in the 280s, I think, both cars had the same numbers. Well made stuff.
Thats right! I may go larger after it's paid off in the year 2525.[sm=smiley36.gif] The K&N CAI is also 2.5", where many other makes are 3", and it would appear that the K&N is just as good if not better than the larger ones.[sm=smiley20.gif] Dustyloins and I are also going with the K&N.[sm=smiley2.gif]
i haven't had any problems with my mopar/borla exhaust after it's initial install and adjustment. as far as the k&n, you guys going just filter (btdt), or all the way (CAI)? if so let me know how it does. i saw a photo of an srt without the front end and saw where the filter ended up. it looked a little scary, from a daily driver stand point. i do wanna be able to drive in the rain with out any intake hiccups.
We're looking into getting the full CAI. Just so you know, the SRT-4's get their air from there already, just follow your intake piping. All the K&N CAI does is simply route it smoother and more directly to that spot and puts the filter on the end of it. You would have to completely submerge the filter in water to cause any problems, and at that point it will be coming in the car with you as well. FYI: If you notice on the K&N CAI it has 2 sections, if you feel it necessary you can remove the lower section and attach the filter to the upper section which will place the filter at about the same location as where the air box was.[sm=smiley20.gif][sm=smiley2.gif]
Alot of guys go with the short ram air just because the shorter flow theoretically allows a larger volume of air, and they figure the pipe gets hot in the engine compartment anyway, plus it's going through the fmic anyway, too. But I'm going with the CAI myself, just because I've seen the dyno charts for the k&n, but I haven't seen any for the short rams.
