2.5" or 3" exhaust?
The SAE branch of the engineering department at the University I work at says different. They claim (through a ton of graphs, formulas, etc) that a well designed exhaust can actually "draw" the exhaust out of the engine, adding power, not taking away power, and reducing back pressure....
The engineering difference between my engine and a SRT-4's lies squarely on the volume of air that is able to be moved in and out of the engine. Slap a DOHC head on an 89 2.5 block and viola, 350hp using caled 89 electronics - see Dean Stilles 82 rampage and many others for an example of this. Wave pulses matter little in a turbo engine. The turbine has to create pressure along with heat - thats how a turbo works. The "waves" are greatly dissipated by the turbine, and traditional thinking about exhausts goes down the drain. Your car would be fastest with only the downpipe because the turbine does not have to blow compressed gasses down the line. See here by respected racer Gary Donovan: http://www.thedodgegarage.com/turbo_exhaust.html This concept applies to an SRT-4 just as much as my car. Just because Mopar only offers one, doesn't mean that is the best.
It has been dyno proven that the Mopar 2.5" exhaust is just as good, if not better, than a 3" exhaust up to if not more than 300 horsepower. I know all about volume vs. velocity. You can argue science and theories all you want, but the dyno has proven it. Now if he were going for 350-400 horsepower or more, I would definately say to go with the 3" exhaust all the way. Personally, I would say go with what's loudest. So what should I go for? 2.5 of 3.5? Because eventually my car will be 350-400hp. I need to win $$$ racing. not for the money, but for the pride and excitement of being a victor
. (This is after I learn how to start properly IN ANY BLEEDIN CAR. *sigh*) so anyway, what's louder? 2.5 or 3.0 ? =) (seems safer to go with 3.0 anyway since I'll be wanting to increase the HP later up to the 350 level.)

This isnt true... if your exaust pipe is too big your goin to create to much back pressure and your performance will be hurt by it. so if this guy wants good breathing and a few minor mods for his car then he shouldnt get some monster exaust.

but turbo lag is reduced the bigger you can go.
