2003 srt-4 owners manual
i got a letter from dcx about a mess up in the 2003 manual. aparrently that they suggested the use of mobil 1 10w-30 oil, where they tested it with 5w-30 for better emissions rating and fuel economy. they say the 10w-30 wouldn't hurt your engine, but they have to recommend in the manual what they tested with before the emissions board.
to quote dcx "if you choose to operate this vehicle in a spirited driving style, the manufacturer recommends the use of a full synthetic engine oil, such as mobil 1 sae 5w-30."

Stick with the 10-30, especially since the weather is getting warmer. They had to send out that letter to comply with EPA regulations. DCX has to recommend the same oil that was tested and approved by the EPA, even if it's just a minor difference in weight, so that the mileage figures and smog figures all match up (Yes, you're right, this IS a waste of taxpayer's dollars).
If you live up north, switch to 5W-30 syn for the winter, otherwise, use 10W-30 in the summer, and all year 'round in the south, use 10W-30. (See your owner's manual, they have a handy chart based upon temps) The SRT-4s run HOT, HOT, HOT. Summer temps here in the south with stop and go traffic call for a 10W-30 syn, just as the salesman and the service manager recommended to me....the tiny difference in "start up" wear will be off-set by the longer life of the engine and related parts....
