Default Tranny Fluid

So I have read the 'how to' on tranny fluid and was all ready to do it. Just so happens I ran into a mechanic buddy who stated that there was no way to replace/ drain all the tranny fluid by simply pulling the plug and that it would take more than that. Any experience out there?

Thanks,
B

'Tis true. You'll get most, but not all out. Nothing major to worry about, just make sure you put the special additive in there.....

When I did mine @ like 35,000 Miles I used Royal Purple Synchromax®. Seems to work just fine for me.

Supposed to do it every 12,000-18,000 miles.

Mine was SEVERELY overfilled, I just changed it tonight. The fluid was clean as a whistle, but HARDCORE overfilled. It only takes 2.5-3 quarts of fluid. I bought Valvoline ATF+4 Full Synthetic and the Mopar Additive from the dealer (about 6 bucks). Shifts like a dream

i changed mine up today. shifts very smoothly.

edit: only one issue... after removing and reinstalling my airbox my check engine flashed code 0073. however, i reset the computer and it hasnt come back on yet. anyone have a codebook that can confirm what this code was? im guessing I pissed off a sensor or something.

ok, answered my own question
P0073-AMBIENT TEMP SENSOR HIGH which brings up another... what does this mean???

Now how important is the additive? I've seen arguments from both sides....

I'm going to put in the Amsoil ATF+4.......

You must have had the key and the sensor unplugged on when you had the airbox out. The sensor at the inlet to the airbox is the IAT.

I'm curious about the additive too. I changed my trans fluid with Dodge's ATF 4 that I got from the dealer. Do I need the additive?

The additive is recommended for the LSD. If you have a 2003 model, you can get by without it. I also know of folks that run other fluids in their trannys, but when it comes to warranty issues, $6 is a no-brainer....
