Default Mopar Performance Short Throw Shifter

I finally put in my Mopar STS at work today. It was really easy except for the black clips that hold the shift cables into the bracket. You have to either use locking pliers or do what I had to which is use regular pliers and a ton of hand strength to hold them clamped onto the clips. Then you have to pull on them like your life is on the line. Removing the console is simple, as was the shifter ****. Getting the console back on and in place was a bit of a problem, I thought I was going to break or crack it, but thankfully it is quite flexible. I have the booger bushings, but didn't initally know where they went. After looking it over and reading the instructions again I had figured it out, but it was getting late and I wanted to get it back together so I left them out for now. It's no biggie though, because all I have to do to put them on is simply unscrew the console and lift it up about 6" to gain access to the cable connections to the shifter levers and remove the rubber ones with the new ones. I also still need to do the ones on the transmission as well, again no biggie.

Now on to my favorite part, it's performance. It reduces the shift throws a whole lot, especially for the forward gears 1-3-5. It only takes about 1" of movement to put it from neutral into first. It needs a little break-in time, it's a little stiff initially, but the throws are frickin' fantastic. I haven't had but 2 miles to drive it since and I'm already loving the difference. It will take a little getting use to after driving it all this time with the original shifter. You cannot beat it for the price, your getting alot for your money. Most STS's are just the stick itself and part of what they do to shorten the throw is reduce the shifter stick height as well as a little geometry change below. These types usually cost the same or more than the Mopar STS and those aftermarket ones usually put the cables at odd angles causing premature wear and failure. The aftermarket ones probably also require an adapter or a different shifter **** than the factory one, but the Mopar STS only allows the use of the factory ****. I can't wait to drive it around later today, hopefully with my Mopar/Borla exhaust on as well too.[sm=smiley4.gif][sm=smiley2.gif]

I'm going to put on my STS right now. Then I think I'll go to my Dodge dealer here and see what they'll charge me to replace that stud.

Like I always say and never do: "smarter not harder". I went out after my breakfast and tried real hard once and then I finally got smarter. I used the back side of a hammer and pried them off. First try on both sides. Then it was smooth sailing. The console went smoothly also. You guys are all very helpful though. I would have never even thought of trying to do it myself before. Thanks.

OMG....I had my console out, had the cables unhooked, and had the mechanism unbolted in about 10 minutes flat. Then i ran into those little b!tch black clips and I quit because I couldn't get them off (and i was short on time). Didn't want to break them. So let me get this straight, just some pliers or beat on them for awhile????? I pried at them and had one of them about halfway off but I couldn't get it any further. Anyways, if there is a really easy way to get them off help me out here, otherwise i'm sure I'll get them off soon enough, I want this shifter installed!!!!!

Just take a hammer and use the back side of it that is used for pulling out nails and hook that onto the black clips and pull. I used the big stud sticking out on both sides for leverage with the hammer. I had them of in a matter of seconds.

Do like he ^ said. The claw end of a hammer would have been much frickin' easier. I've had a few people check it out after the install, running it through the gears while it's parked, and they all loved it. I haven't had any missed shifts or stalling issues from the new short throws.

Got it, I tried using vicegrips before but they were the little baby ones. I went and got a set of bigger ones, clamped it on there and pulled hard and it came off. No complaints with it here. Short, firm shifts is all I get. Very awesome, I love this thing.[sm=smiley20.gif]
