hey fellow mopar freaks...names greg and i just bought an '03 srt-4 with all the goodies (i would have done the work myself, but i only had $13,000 to spend and i got the car with everything i need for that price exactly)
anyway, it has:

AEM EMS
AEM 5 bar MAP
AEM boost solenoid
AEM CAI
AEM serial gage
AEM wideband sensor
AGP Turbonetics HP61 Ball bearing turbo kit (new style manifold)
AGP FMI
AGP Plug and wire kit
AGP cold side pipe (powder coated silver)w/ HKS BOV
Tial Wastegate
MSD 1008CC injectors
Lorenzo 60 TB
ED hot side S.S. pipe
3" Custom S.S. Turbo back w/ (2) bullet resonators and 1 muffler in back

quite a list of mods, which i never would have accomplished on my budget! it has put down 411hp @22psi on 93oct. and 486hp @28psi on race gas, and its crossed the line in 11.5 @ 124mph... (these stats are all from before the hp61 turbo was put on, before it was equiped with the hp60)

HERE'S MY PROBLEM:
WHEN I PICKED IT UP TODAY, YES, I DID JUST GET IT TODAY, IT WAS RUNNING PRETTY GOOD...IDLE IS SHAKY, A LITTLE STUTTERING AT LOW RPM, AND AN OCCASIONAL STALL OUT WHEN SITTING STILL AT A RED LIGHT...I DONT THINK ANY OF THESE ISSUES ARE PROBLEMS, CONSIDERING THAT THE CAR WAS TUNED IN NEW JERSEY AND I AM IN MIAMI, FL..SO I FIGURE ONCE I TUNE IT FOR THE HUMIDITY AND HEAT HERE, IT SHOULD RUN A LOT BETTER RIGHT??
ANYWAY, DRIVING HOME ON I-95 IN HEAVY TRAFFIC, I FINALLY SAW AN OPENING AND PUNCHED IT...CLEAN THROUGH 1ST, BUT HALFWAY THROUGH 2ND GEAR (AROUND 3500-4000 RPM) IT FELT LIKE IT POPPED OUT OF GEAR AND THE TACHOMETER NEEDLE HIT THE REDLINE...THE CAR CAME TO A STOP AND IDLED FINE, BUT WHEN I PUT IT INTO GEAR AND LET THE CLUTCH OUT, THE CAR DID NOT MOVE...NEITHER 1ST OR IN REVERSE...AND SOON I NOTICED THAT I WAS ABLE TO SLIDE THE SHIFTER INTO ANY GEAR WITHOUT PUSHING THE CLUTCH AND THE CAR DID NOT REACT TO THIS...IT JUST SAT THERE AT IDLE AS IF THE CAR WERE IN NEUTRAL!!!! WHAT IS GOING ON????
IM SURE THIS IS SOMETHING IN THE TRANNY/CLUTCH...BUT THIS IS MY FIRST DAY IN THE WORLD OF SRT'S AND I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT HAPPENED....
HAS ANYONE HAD THIS PROBLEM??? DO YOU KNOW WHAT IT IS???
A FRIEND THOUGHT I MAY HAVE SNAPPED AN INPUT SHAFT...BUT I HAVE NO IDEA...A LOCAL SRT-4 SPECIALIST I TALKED ALSO ASSUMED THAT THIS WAS THE PROBLEM...BUT HOW DO I KNOW THAT?? HOW DO I KNOW ITS NOT JUST A LITTLE LINK SOMEWHERE AND THAT THIS GUY IS JUST GOING TO CHARGE ME FOR THE INPUT SHAFT TO MAKE A QUICK BUCK OFF OF ME????

With all the mods you have, the problem you speak of is highly probable.....there are aftermarket products that will solve your problem........

One of two things:

1. Broken input shaft.

2. Broken Axle.


Broken axle is the most likely culprit.

THANK YOU GUYS VERY MUCH.....YOU KNOW, I'VE BEEN DREAMING ABOUT THIS DAY FOR OVER FOUR YEARS NOW!!! SINCE THE FIRST DAY I SAW THAT THE SRT-4 WAS GOING INTO PRODUCTION I SAID I HAVE TO HAVE THAT CAR NO MATTER WHAT....AND I TOLD EVERYONE THAT I WILL HAVE AN SRT-4 ONE DAY...AND I HAVE TRIED SO MANY TIMES TO GET ONE, BUT I WAS NEVER ABLE TO REALLY AFFORD ONE, INCLUDING THE INSURANCE...TODAY WAS THE DAY THAT MY DREAM BECAME A REALITY...I AM THE HAPPIEST MAN ON THE PLANET! (NOT TO MENTION I GOT THE BEST G.F. IN THE WORLD TOO..)

ANYWAY...HOW MUCH SHOULD I EXPECT TO PAY FOR AN INPUT SHAFT AND HOW MUCH SHOULD I PAY FOR A NEW AXLE? CAN I GET THESE PARTS USED? ARE THERE AFTERMARKET REPLACEMENTS FOR THESE PARTS THAT WILL BE ABLE TO HANDLE THE HORSEPOWER MY CAR IS MAKING??
AND HOW MUCH SHOULD I EXPECT TO PAY FOR THE PARTS, AND HOW MUCH SHOULD I PAY FOR THE PARTS AND THE LABOR TO INSTALL EACH ONE RESPECTIVELY?

ONE MORE VERY IMPORTANT QUESTION....

I KNOW ONE SRT-4 SPECIALIST IN NORTH MIAMI...BUT I DO NOT KNOW OF ANY OTHER MECHANICS THAT I COULD TRUST WITH MY NEW BABY...PARTICULARLY WITH EXPERIENCE WITH SRT-4'S AND THE AEM EMS....AND OF COURSE, I NEED AN IN HOUSE DYNO TO HAVE MY BEAST PROPERLY TUNED FOR ITS NEW SETTINGS....
DOES ANYONE HAPPEN TO KNOW OF ANY GOOD SHOPS I COULD CHECK OUT IN THE SOUTH FLORIDA AREA?

If it is a broken input shaft, it'd probably be cheaper to just get another transmission from the boneyard. I got one from an '04 (I wanted the LSD since I had an '03) for $1200 shipped to my house. There are alot of people interested in a stronger input shaft, but nobody is willing to pay what'll take to get it done so no manufacturer is willing to make it. Basically if you have an extra $2-3k laying around you could get a custom input shaft made.

If it is an axle you can upgrade to DSS Stage 3 axles for about $750 and have a 1 year warantee against breakage. Or the stock replacements are less expensive, but have no warrantee.

Another possibility is it's an intermediate shaft (I've broken one of those). Seems to me those are right at $100 and nobody is making a replacement that I know of.


Most likely you've broken an axle, so I'd start there first. I broke a stock axle, one of the DSS axles (replaced for free) and an intermediate shaft. And the input shaft was cracked and getting ready to break. My car has seen dozens of launches at 4500+ rpm on 26x8" slicks and was making (at the time) around 475whp.

I thought of one other possibility, it's unlikely given the syptoms, but it could be the culprit as well is the shift selector inside the transmission. AGP has a replacement:

i was quoted only $400 for the input shaft, and $500 to install it...i wonder why i found it for so much cheaper (it was the dodge dealer that told me $400 for the part)
NOW I HAVE YET ANOTHER PROBLEM!!!! when i went to the dealer to order the part they told me that in 2003 they made TWO different input shafts, and the only way to find out which one i need is to take out the tranny and determine which one i have VISUALLY!!!! wtf is that?? did dodge really do that?? it doesnt seem right to me...i dont think dodge would be dumb enough to do something like that!
if this is true, i will have to pay the shop to take the tranny out monday and figure out which one it is, then go to the dealer and order the right one...thats gonna leave me without a car for at least a week...
DOES ANYONE KNOW IF THIS IS TRUE? did they really make two different input shafts for the 2003 model year? and is there really no other way to find out which one i need without taking it out?

and i was thinking, if an axle were broken wouldnt one of the wheels still be getting power???

Even with a LSD the car isn't going to move if one axle is broken, but you have a 2003, which means no LSD; you have an "open" differential.

$400 for a input shaft from the dealer sounds about right, but it's only going to be a strong as the one that broke. Getting a stronger one is where needing the $$$ comes in.

$400 for an input shaft and $500 for the install = $900. OR spend ~$1200 like I did and get a used 2004/2005 transmission and get the LSD with it. Considering the LSD by itself brand new is more than 1200 (without installation costs) it's worth it.
