Default Cold Air intake question

O.K., this is bugging me now. I installed a K & N FIPK 3 inch cold air intake on my car. The stock turbo inlet size is only 2 1/2 inches. K & N sent a straight 3 inch coupler to connect the cold air tube to the turbo. My question for them , which they don't seem to be able to answer for some unknown reason, therefore I'm asking y'all is, shouldn't I be using a 3 inch to 2 1/2 coupler to connect the two ?

The coupler they supplied fits great on the cold air intake but it's sloppy loose on the turbo side, obviously too big. The clamp does seem to clamp it down but it just doesn't seem like that's the way it should fit. I'm worried about boost leaks at that spot especially since I have to tighten those clamps once a week.

It reminds me of someone putting a pair of pants on 3 inches too big in the waist and cinching them tight with a belt.

Modern Performance who I'm not a big fan of does sell a 3 inch to 2/12 inch silicone coupler, should I buy it ? What do the other CAI manufacturers use to hook a 3 inch cold air tube to the 2 1/2 inch turbo inlet ?

I don't think.....I AM NOT SURE.....but I no matter how loose the fit is I don't think that you will have a boost leak from there......but if you aren't comfortable with the fit then you should fix it or it will just bother you...I know atleast that it would bother me

You should have got the K & N Typhoon CAI, it's a true CAI and is the same size as the turbo inlet all the way. I don't know of many with the FIPK, but this is the first I've heard of them being too large at the turbo inlet.

The K&N Typhoon CAI is the BIGGEST train wreck to happen to the SRT-4. Do some research on this intake PLEASE. This intake has caused dozen's about dozen's of people to destroy their stock turbo with the **** poor design.

Keep in mind, an intake is an intake on this car. Whether it be 2.5", 3", 4" whatever. They all do the same thing. Create space in your engine bay, look pretty & make more noise. So long as you have a good solid design intake with good coupler's you will not run into any problems. As for the straight through design, AGP intakes offer their intakes with ONLY a 3" coupler. How do they get it to fit? With an adapter that comes with the kit that slids over the turbo fitting, cuffing with the 3" coupler causing a 2.5" fit. Other companies such as JMB Performance, Mopar/AEM (same intake) and other's offer a 2.5" (JMB offer's a 3" optional) for the stock& S3R turbo.

Hozay, I did some research that's why I stayed away from the Typhoon in particular.

I'm not sure I made a much better choice with the FIPK and I agree the biggest advantage to any of these intakes is creating room. One reason I DID go with the FIPK is CARB certification and I didn't want the possibility of water sucking up into the intake, also I got a great price on it. What is the best design CAI out there that is CARB certified ?

I've had my SRT-4 with the K & N Typhoon CAI on it for almost 3 years now and it has been perfect and 100% problem free. I have not heard any complaints about them either, everyone I know that has them are fine with them. What problems are you talking about with them? I have always questioned the thin elbow that connects the turbo to the CAI, I have wondered if it doesn't suck somewhat shut under high boost which is why I've looked into replacing that with a mandrel bent pipe and two thicker silicone couplers to keep that from happening.

i too am curious about these typhoon problems. the only one i had was when i had it set up as the short ram, i broke the bracket that connects the pipe to the valve cover. i guess that was from all the hard launches without new motor mounts. k&n sent me a new tube with no questions asked in about a week and i haven't had any problems since. except they don't make silver anymore so i have a chrome tube connecting to a silver tube going down to my filter.

*sigh*

Honestly, I'm not going to dig up every single thread on the issue so I will simply say, do as you wish. Enjoy your typhoon 2.5" cai.

No one asked you to dig up threads, we were just wanting to know what issues people have had with them.
