Dealer claiming 'conventional oil' now to be used on SRT's
Hello all. I am new to this forum, but not forums in general. I recently bought a 04 Blue SRT-4 which I love, and am about to take it in to the dealer for it's first "covered/paid for by the dealer" oil-change. I have been reading this forum and noticed a lot of chatter about this topic, and decided I would see what you guys thought about this quote. I called my dealer today, Moss Bros. Dodge *a 5-star dealer* and asked to talk to the service manager to confirm that Mobile-1 was being used on my oil-change. He said "no, we use conventional oil" I mentioned that the owners manual, and pretty much the vibe on the internet was that Mobile-1 was about the only oil to be used on it, with the exception of the other which I have seen Dusty mention a few times. He stated that there is an addendum/ammendment to the service manual on the SRT's, and after they did further testing, they decided that conventional oil was okay. I asked if he had a printout I could have to verify this, and he said he could look it back up, he believes he lost his copy, but could look it back up and let me see it, but could not let me 'just have it.' Any info/suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks!
Thanks!

Oooh, that concerns me... I'll call my local dealer and see what they say. I doubt he's correct, just trying to save a buck. That would surprise me that they'd just change it and not announce it in any way... Hmmm... and he thinks he lost it... yadda yadda... that's a dance... I don't think he's being truthful.

yah Amanda, I didn't think so either. He's just a service advisor, and he's also the one who told me they're open 'till 9, but didn't want to schedule any oil changes past 6. Because as you all know, it could end up taking 3 hours to change the oil when they find out I got more $ in mods into my car than I do miles on it. ;-P

I know they are free oil changes and free stuff ROCKS... but to be safe, maybe supply your own oil to ensure you keep your car safe...? Or do the oil changes yourself...?
I hate to toss this off topic, but you've got me intrigued... what have you done to the car this far?

Mopar Stage 3 Coilovers, Perrin Pressure Pipe, HKS SSQ BOV, AGP BOP, Clear Corners, Silvania Silverstars, AGP Mesh Grill, Perrin Short Shifter w/booger bushings, MSD Coil & Wires, DC Strut F & R Bars, Hotchkis Anti-Sway bar kit (will be here as soon as they're done bending the bar/measuring on their test car), tinted windows ( for that go fast performance) , 160 degree Thermo (will be shipped today, btw: Howell Automotive r0x, 9:38 i ordered the thermostats online, 10:07 i got a fedex tracking number).
note on the S3 coilovers: To anyone who has them, advise needed. I got it installed last week, in the install notes, it says to toss out the washer on the rear struts, 'cause it's used for shipping purposes only.... after install, btw: I left the bump-stops on *factory you can't go below this unless you tap-out our screw thing* and have the ride height all the way down. when i go over bumps, or just push down in a rocking manner on the back/trunk with the trunklid open, there is a vibrating/rattling noise coming from the tops of the struts.... upon further inspection, it looks like there is a small enough space between the bottom of the nut (which btw: IS fully tightened down) and the tower, which is where the noise is coming from. Anyone who has them, or experience in these, please advise on any solutions. I'm either going to try putting washers back in them, or finding some sort of rubber washer/bushing to put in there. Also: i did call mopar, and ask their techs about this, and they stated it was true, and that was they way they come/are. I was going to call KW about it, but they're in the UK, and didn't get a chance to during their business hours. now that that blab is over. any more questions dodgegirl?? :-) I bet not after that response.

Just found this on another srtforum..... I'd post a link to it, but not quite sure what the linking/website posting rules are here yet...
What type of Oil should I use in my SRT-4?
In the 2003 SRT-4 Owners manual it recommends Mobil 1 5w30 Synthetic Motor Oil. But due to emissions testing rules and regulations since the SRT-4 was not tested with Mobil 1 there was a TSB(Technical Service Bulletin) issued for the owners manual noting to use 5w30 conventional oil as that is what was tested for federal emissions standards.
5w30 is the recommended weight of the oil used in the SRT-4. Most people feel that since it is a performance car they would prefer Mobil 1 which is perfectly safe in the SRT. Whatever you do please just make sure you change your oil regularly with premium grade conventional or synthetic oils.

RE: Dealer claiming 'conventional oil' now to be used on SRT's
I had a "confrontation" (to put it mildly) when I took my SRT-4 in and they tried to put dino oil in it.....my salesman, my service tech and even OTHER dealers advised me to use synthetic. I'll bet money the dealer is trying to save money. I even sent an e-mail to the owner and the lady in the "customer satisfaction department" sent me one back saying it was better if I bought in my own synthetic oil since they would have to charge me an "above retail price" if they put in Mobil 1.
I find it hard to believe it took DCX well over 2 years to determine dino oil was OK.....OK for what? If you don't mind an engine rebuild every 75,000 miles? If you don't drive in temps over 90 degrees or under 40 degrees?
It's really a mute point. If you want your engine to last, use synthetic.

RE: Dealer claiming 'conventional oil' now to be used on SRT's
Yah, I know I'm only going to use Mobile-1 in it, but was kinda upset when they told me this. Especially with the temperatures you mentioned, I'm sure from Texas, you know about heat. I'm from the Palm Springs area, and well, right now it's 112°F outside. I rarely see temps below 110 for a couple months straight, nor do I see below 90 for a better portion of 6 mos. I don't think I'll be taking it into them for my 'free' oil change anytime soon. Not until I get more definitive answers on it. Maybe glhs will have a better answer. ;-P

Yeah, heat is a major issue and syns hold up better than dino oils in all the tests I've seen. I still take my SRT-4 to the dealer for the oil (for the first year, anyway), but I buy my Mobil 1 on base or get my Amsoil at a discount as a "preferred customer" and take it with me for the oil change. I also watch them change the oil.[&:]

sounds like the best plan i suppose. got any good places online to buy oil by the volume? along with myself, my best friends brother has a silver 04 srt-4, and my best friend is looking into getting a red one, or possibly waiting on the Evo MR whenever it shows up.
