Default Manual valve lever

My 01 Ram 1550 van is currently in a Dodge dealership garage to have the valve body plate replaced. They are now telling me that the manual valve lever is broken and needs to be replaced. I made a call to a local tranny shop, and the tech there told me that if this lever was broken, he was pretty sure that my van wouldn't start since this lever engages the neutral safety switch. Can someone verify this?

Welcome to DF
The manual lever valve is part of the valve body assy. Are they talking about the shift lever on the outside of the case?
