Hi, my name is Gary and I reside in Michigan. I currently own a 01 Durango with the 5.9 motor in it and it is a 4 X 4 all wheel drive model. My question is this. I will be moving up to purchase a bigger boat that has a weight of 5400 lbs, not quite sure how much the trailer itself weighs. I have recently had the transmission rebuilt and replaced the front differential. Will my Durango be able to pull it well enough to not struggle all that much?

Your best bet is going to be having a chat with the dealer. I can find tons of info on the web on the Durangos, but, no one wants to talk about towing capacity. Except for the 4.7 V-8 version...... no one seems to have noticed the people buy the bigger engines, and tow with them as well. I have seen numbers anywhere from 2400 lbs, all the way up to 8940...... I don't trust any of them.
That said, I think 5400 lbs is pushing it, for reason other than rated capacity. Unless your trailer has it's own brakes, I could see the tail wagging the dog...... Never a good scene. If you want to haul that boat around on a regular basis, I would recommend picking up a 3/4 ton truck of some description.
Folks in the durango section will prolly have more (accurate....) information.
